i'll be honest, i'd say roughly 50% of my plugins are pirated but that's because i haven't paid them yet.
couple of months ago i spent a few weeks dl'ing everything i think i'll need and am now in the process of buying the individual plugins one by one. of course it takes a while, i'm only 18 but that doesn't mean i can't pay the shit i use. i just need a bit longer with my shit job at burger king

and to all the inevitable "I'M 12 AND WHAT IS PAYING FOR STUFF?"-posts: just quit smoking for a few weeks, stop going out on weekends and BAM! there's your massive to play with. if you lack the dedication for that, go find another hobby.

When I first, first started dabbling, I had cracks given to me by a mate.

They were shit, caused me no end of problems and I am sure contributed to my PC's demise. After that, I thought 'you know what, I am enjoying this, this is what I want to do', so I bought Cubase and Massive, then Kontakt a little later.

Since then, I have paid for everything. I don't know why I used cracks to begin with, I was so anti-piracy when it came to video games/music/film etc, it was a little hypocritical to be using cracked software, but they were a big, juicy carrot at the time and I couldn't resist.

I would never use another cracked piece of software though. Not only do you appreciate things a lot more when you have grafted for them, but everything works, there are no nasty surprises and my cash is going to the people who are keep on providing us with these toys, the software dev's. They are the one's who lose out at the end of the day, but they are the one's who provide us with the tools we need to do what we do.

I like hardware...but I think everyone has used pirated software at some point in their career. I don't know any engineer that hasn't at some point, trial period got used up by an unexpected visit from the inlaws, etc. The deal is paying for what you use. Bragging about knowing where the good kraks are is so dumb. If it's worth having and using it's worth supporting the creators. Just like music. I've got plenty of mp3s people have given me, just like in the days of mixtapes. That's how you get put onto new things. If it's worth using more than once or twice it's worth supporting the intellectual property owner. I can proudly say all of the software on all of my computers is legit. Clean living and filthy basses???

Truth. "They''re the same as the full version" is bollocks. I'd rather have one piece I know inside and outside than gobs of kit that I've only listened to a handful of presets on.

100% legit here, have been for years. and years!

You value your tools far more then, and really get to know them, rather than just downloading another synth.

I did use crax a looooong time ago (starting with Cubase on atari ST Mike Hunt edition lol!) but no more. Even windows is legit, something i thought id never bother with.

Just because someone didn't pay for what they use doesn't mean they're downloading every last thing they hear about or come across man.

100% legit here and as i use reason and record I don't have any use in other software. Now I spend my money on hardware and once in a few years on the updates of reason and record

Since I can get the student discount I got logic when I bought my new Mac last year

Having had a unreliable cracked copy of logic 8 in the past spending only £140 on version 9 was a no brainer.

I've got a cracked copy of massive etc, doesn't work properly and i can make anything i desire with the built in plugins.

I really like the tag audio freeware stuff though. The noisemaker au/vst is great!

Started producing on cracked Reason 3, was given v4 by the same source and they (same friend) are now offering me v5. Used the cracks from 2007 to early last year and then bought my own system 100% legit. way too worried about my computer to even dream of installing cracks now.

Yes. In addition to my legit copy of FL, only non freeware VST I have is Massive, which I bought in the NI sale before Christmas.

Considering how much fantastic freeware there is available these days I think there is little excuse to pirate stuff and I'm saying this as someone who has illegally pirated stuff in the past. I want to go 100% legit one of these days even if that means I lose a few songs due to the use of pirated AU's in them.

It's not about what you've got, it about how you use it.

I agree with this for VSTs. Stuff like Span, Toad, Peach, Synth1, dubSiren, etc I've got shit loads of use out of, way more than Massive (so far). Can't say the same for DAWs though as have only used FL.

I downloaded SuperCollider this week (a freeware program) which is possibly the most creatively free music making program I've ever encountered (and yes I know max/msp and use Pure Data in my productions).

As far as I'm concerned too many people want a "brutal electro" instant sound good preset. If you want to be creative and sound good you need to put the work in and music making environments like Pure Data and SuperCollider encourage this.

I started out w a crack of acid 4 about five years ago. Almost immediately bought fl and haven't used cracked since. A few cracked non music programs have caused me to flatten and reinatall the OS more than once...not worth.

Also agree id rather now one synth/ daw inside and out rather than having a thousand vsts I've used a couple times each.

I got Adobe CS3, Cinema 4D, Reason 4, GRM Tools Reson, Camtasia outstanding on my 'cracks to pay for' list lol

But everything else is legit, honest guv.

Bought my Windows 7, MS Office, MS Project, Reaper + payware plugins...

GRM Tools won't extract a penny from me cuz they're a rip off and I'm buycotting Propellerheads. Just leaves Adobe waiting to collect along with the other graphics tools vendors... And those apps cost $$$
