Re: Ever play a chill set to a bunch of brosteppas ?

Post by Phigure » Tue Mar 08, 2011 12:19 am

I do it all the time actually

around here, dance music is nothing but brostep and electro house

So I throw house parties, where I'M FUCKING IN CHARGE OF THE MUSIC

I try to play all the shit they would never listen to (obviously still something they can kind of dig though)... I've gotten away with a lot of DMZ...

I played at this night as the warm up and I started off with a few classic wobble type tracks (rubber chicken etc) and filled the dance up nicely and thought, hey these guys are digging it perhaps I should try some deep tunes. Dropped city limits and my gosh I have never cleared a dancefloor that fast before. Literally two people left skanking my girlfriend included. But fuck it. I aint selling out my integrity for shit.

Someone please attach the intro to Sweet Shop to Goat Stare or something equally lulz.

Proceed to play it to a gathering of bros.

"Excuse me good sir, could you play some dubstep"
"This is DMZ. This is the nexus of dubstep. You cannot more dubstep.
"No, but I mean real dubstep. Play... er, Jahova."

I've played breakcore/techno sets after being booked for dubstep to break up the monotony.

There's no good reason to listen to 140bpm for 12 hours in a row regardless of the talent involved

I used to play some pretty chill sets back when I had my residency; now I play less, and just play as many different styles that I can. Brosteppers here love it as long as you do it right.

That's a wasteman tactic. If you did that at a night I put on, I wouldn't pay you
If your record bag sounds the same as the last couple of DJs, and you think your set will be monotonous, don't play a different genre...buy better records!

you sound like a shite promoter, it is a DJ's duty to play whatever the fuck they want

Try not paying Martyn lol he loves playing different genres to the nights status quo

If a promoter puts on a night with a specific sound in mind, and books appropriate DJ's who then play an inappropriate set, it would not live up to the promoter's, or customers' expectations of that night. Maybe a few people would be pleasantly surprised, but the people who turned up for a dubstep set, at a dubstep night, wouldn't be.
If a promoter was to book Martyn, they'd already know that he doesn't play straight dubstep. If I booked someone and was expecting straight dubstep, but ended up with fucking breakcore, I'd go mad.

Imagine being a Borgore fan and turning up to a gig where he plays 60's soul music because he wanted to "break up the monotony". You'd be pissed.

Indeed, and when you book Martyn you have to expect something like this. I went to see him expecting dubstep, and he went full techno. Was one of the best set of the night, he outshined Len Faki in the other room lol
