I think he's saying don't record your DJ set ahead of time only to play the recorded mix on the night, while pretending to actually mix. Essentially, don't be a faker.

Alternatively, he could be saying to be more spontaneous, by not having a set playlist for the night. This is harder if you're a beginner as spontaneity relies heavily on a DJs mixing skill; his ability to both make quick decisions and to execute those decisions while keeping the integrity of the mix.

So I have my first show coming up, im pretty excited but a little nervous. I've played in numerous other bands in a spread of genres, but this is my first show performing dubstep. Im pretty comfortable mixing, but what I'm more worried about is my presence. I've been watching other DJs perform and there seems to be a lot of finger-guns and claw-hands.

What do you guys like to see your DJ doing? Or do you not care and just want to hear great music? Should I just do a bunch of drugs and just completely let go?

Practice your opening mix i.e the smoothest transition you can between your first two tunes. Practice until it's seamless. Once you've got one amazing mix under your belt, the rest of the set will just come naturally.

Don't over do it on drink/drugs though; there is a difference between letting loose and falling over.

Don't get drunk

If you cock up a mix react quickly and don't just leave it clanging and try poker face through it, but also don't pull it out and pull silly faces at the crowd either. Just act like you would if cocked up in a room with a couple people who aren't paying that much attention.

Dunno about stage presence. I have a feeling I look really pissed off or deep in concentration most of the time.

I'm playing on Saturday, probably my first major support set (and first time on a stage rather than in a booth) so I'm planning to go with the tunes.. If a tune is heavy then I'll react how I normally react (going nuts), maybe interacting (well looking at, haha) the crowd more often - if I refix the tune, go mental as per. yeah

What LA Boxer said about Gaslamp is I guess true if don't want to/know how to move with the music but lemme tell you Gaslamp has a huuuuge following because of his crazy shit (dance moves and mixing style) so it's not like Gaslamp is losing gigs because he feels the music

I go a bit mental when im mixing aswell. Just how it goes.

Be yourself, fuck what everyone else thinks or says. Play a good set and everything else dosn't matter.

I generally play sets what have some sort of journey aspect... Starting one vibe and carrying through my record bag till I reach to another place..Switching it up when I see fit.

After all, if you're booked to play a gig you're booked to play what you like so read the crowd and judge whats in your bag.. Don't go buying tunes you don't like just to get reactions..

Best advice I ever got was to take a beer up with you and have a few sips when you're feeling a bit nervous throughout (like, if you do a bit of a dodgey mix, instead of worrying about it, take your mind off it by having a gulp of beer) after the first couple of tunes, you'll become relaxed anyways!

Most importantly, if you don't feel like going crazy, don't! If you drop a tune which makes you wanna brock out, brock out! Even if the crowd isn't feeling the tune your energy will be projected onto them and they'll feel a little more into your performance.

The main thing about Djing I've found is to just enjoy it, even if you fack up a few mixes and forget to play a couple of tunes just be grateful you're playing on (hopefully) a better system than you have at home.. If anything hearing my own tunes on big fuck off rigs is worth the hassle of traveling and the late nights.

the only thing i can add is,

- when you are sorting your tunes to bring, take careful care to think about whether you should NOT bring a tune to play at thatt particular night/event aswell, even tho you may like it and want to, there are some timeslots/gigs/crowds where you should focus on what NOT to bring out of your collection, more than what to bring; cuz in the moment you might want to draw for a dub with a dodgy mixdown and regret it when it doesnt drop on par with other tracks around it (thats obv where skill in the mix comes into play more aswell).
