boosting level of mix for listening

I know there is a thread on here somewhere about this just cant find it for the life of me.

Im just wondering what most of you guys put on your master bus to increase the level of your mix so when you throw it up on soundcloud or w/e you dont have to turn up your volume after listening to someone else's music. anything more than compression? and im assuming you want subtle compression, having its use primarily for gaining the track?

I have no plans on getting anything professionally mastered so this is just for mine and others listening purposes.
