I generally play sets what have some sort of journey aspect... Starting one vibe and carrying through my record bag till I reach to another place..Switching it up when I see fit.
After all, if you're booked to play a gig you're booked to play what you like so read the crowd and judge whats in your bag.. Don't go buying tunes you don't like just to get reactions..
Best advice I ever got was to take a beer up with you and have a few sips when you're feeling a bit nervous throughout (like, if you do a bit of a dodgey mix, instead of worrying about it, take your mind off it by having a gulp of beer) after the first couple of tunes, you'll become relaxed anyways!
Most importantly, if you don't feel like going crazy, don't! If you drop a tune which makes you wanna brock out, brock out! Even if the crowd isn't feeling the tune your energy will be projected onto them and they'll feel a little more into your performance.
The main thing about Djing I've found is to just enjoy it, even if you fack up a few mixes and forget to play a couple of tunes just be grateful you're playing on (hopefully) a better system than you have at home.. If anything hearing my own tunes on big fuck off rigs is worth the hassle of traveling and the late nights.
$$$
the only thing i can add is,
- when you are sorting your tunes to bring, take careful care to think about whether you should NOT bring a tune to play at thatt particular night/event aswell, even tho you may like it and want to, there are some timeslots/gigs/crowds where you should focus on what NOT to bring out of your collection, more than what to bring; cuz in the moment you might want to draw for a dub with a dodgy mixdown and regret it when it doesnt drop on par with other tracks around it (thats obv where skill in the mix comes into play more aswell).

You have to swing them around, build them up and then back down. Having several go-to mellow tracks that you can mix in at any time is as important as having several go-to banger tracks.
haven't read much of the thread, will contribute when i have more time. Just wanted to point out from my experience living and playing in a few areas of the US. The kids I've played to here simply do not care about the chill tunes, making this a very tricky situation. I still play plenty of chill tunes cause it's really boring otherwise obviously. Just saying it's tricky, the mixing has to be on point. I try to play very different tunes, changing BPMs very quickly.

The punters over there sound like they have the attention span of a goldfish.

Try not to smoke too many spliffs before performing.
Keep it for after you've done your thing.
Drinks some beers to forget about your nerves tough, but don't exaggerate.

The show went really well. I played for an hour and change, blasted my own tracks in the mix. I was the opening act so there weren't that many people there, but my friends were tearing up the floor. No one took photos, or video, and I forgot to hit record in ableton before I started my set.
So, i don't have any evidence other than my name on a poster, and I got two more gigs out of it.
