I'm travelling at the moment (nobody rob my house).

I'm currently sat on the banks of the Meekong River in southern Vietnam, having been in Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and 3 months in India.

Do it bro, just save some money and book a flight. Simple as.

I can't figure out how to find the URL of pictures from the new-fangled facebook so allow.

I am planning on travelling in the next few years after I've saved up a fair bit. Finish uni this summer so, try and jump into a job and save the pennies!

Rent out the Hostel and Taken DVDs just to get you upto speed and do some research on the local areas you are planning to visit so you don't end up looking like an ignorant tourist just cherry-picking culture for facebook snaps. Oh and batter your immune system with exotic foods before you go, that way you won't be pissing shit for a week in some foreign rest rooms.

Also, if you really want to find a cheap place to stay away from stnuc avoid Lonely Planet books.

If you must get a guidebook something like Footprint or Rough Guide has stuff in it that LP doesn't and therefore are usually emptier and cheaper.

Oh, and avoid Kho San Road. Except for getting a tattoo.

everything this man has said is true, especially kho san road.

try and go with someone whos a massive cheapskate, you might get pissy because your not in the most comfortable accomodation in the world, but in the long run its better not to squander all your cash monies when theres better things to be spending it on.

If you are gonna get a tattoo on KSR tho I suggest you get shit-faced on Samsong first, make the decision drunkenly and without much thought and go to Martin's 13.

Those boys are fucking winners.

Khao San Road - I've never seen so many drunk white people in a small area. I was supposed to stay at Sukhumvit Road, but I flew from Hanoi and got to Bangkok at midnight. I asked around if anyone's going there but everyone I met were heading to KSR so I went ahead and shared a taxi with them, for my safety since I'm a solo female traveler. When I got there, I felt like I was in a mini Vegas. Didn't stay very long in BKK, I went to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to fulfill my dream since I was 12 years old.

Boy, was I disappointed! Can you say human zoo? It was my other option because my flight to Burma was cancelled due to the cyclone (2008).

Loved the foods despite not knowing half of it.

You should start saving and start reading on the places you want to travel. Once you've saved enough for a plane ticket, look for one on sale. Then get an itinerary going. Budget the rest of your money on shelter and transportation first, things you want to do and food next, and stuff you want to buy last.

I backpacked more than half of the US for a couple of summers (2-3 months) on Greyhound and felt the vibe and the culture of each state differ from one another. It costed me at least $1,000 each summer. I traveled all over Asia (5 countries extensively, 3 for a few days) for 4 months costed me $4,000; London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, and Marrakech (1.5 months) for $2,000. Those are all total costs which included round trip fares, transportations, accommodations, sightseeing, foods/stuff. I'm doing South America in two years. I think I am doing Australia and New Zealand next summer. I don't have any itinerary for this summer. I procrastinated and I can't find any cheap tickets to anywhere. If I can find a cheap one to China, I'll go. Then travel overland to Nepal and Tibet for 2 months, which is always not enough.

Be safe when you travel. Your safety should come first before anything else. Don't be a fucking tourist - know some of the language, know some of the areas - how to get in and out. Travel light. Learn to cook easy but filling meals if you stay at hostels/guesthouses. Always drink bottled water. Trust the locals. Just because you have more money than they will ever have, does not mean they will rob you. At the same time, don't flaunt your shit, they will rob you. Learn to haggle. Eat where there's a lot of locals. Get vaccinated (rabies, malaria, hepatitis!). Your eyes will give you a better and more vivid memory than your camera. Learn to ingest everything with them rather than your viewfinder. You are missing the whole picture!

Did I mention, eat?

I've done travelling but, to have done so, I went travelling.
Don't plan too much & take as little as possible...
ultimately all yu need to take is money, passport & a foto of someone who'll miss you.

thats an odd way of thinking, shouldn't it be of someone you'll miss?

And yeah traveling is well worth it, everyone should try and do it. £1000 did me for 3 months around SE asia a few years ago....it did change my life in that rather than being like some friends that got mortgages/kids and permanent jobs in their 20's I basically went between ski seasons/work/travel for years- since been to Brazil, Peru, N America, NZ, Australia, S Africa, Russia and most of Europe. There's more stuff out there than anyone will be able to see in a lifetime so don't hang about not looking.

Why would you get a tattoo on Khao San Rd?
It`s good for beer, hoes and fake-dreads.

We spent our time in the jungle and canoeing around the islands in the Andaman sea.
Lived on a rural, muslim fishing village.
Checked out the rubber plantations and ate the most amazing sea food.

Step off the deck onto the beach, climb on the canoe and paddle direct from the beach.
Paddle to an island, no-one in site, camp on the beach and paddle off in the morning.

Bangkok also had it`s moments, shopping monets that is.

South Africa is a great place to travel to.
The plane ticket isn`t super cheap but you`ll save on most other things.
The scenery is never ending really.
Travel within SA is very cheap.
You can hop the border to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Madagascar, etc.

Or you can just visit the Transkie, Swaziland and Malawi for awesome smokeables.

Thinking about doing some backpacking in April for a week. Don't have much time.
Actually, I don't have time for big holidays for the coming 5 years.
