De La Mancha makes some pretty cool free retro synths. This one is aimed specifically at 8bit chiptune sounds.

Mini SID - great for crazy arps. As used in the tune in my sig. Not sure if it's actually 8-bit though. 
There's also basic 64 which is sweet.
