CD's and illegal downloads. I hate paying for digital downloads. When I buy music I want to be able to hold it, not just be able to store it on my computer.

I do feel bad for illegally downloading, but when I get a job I will definitely try to legally buy all my music. It's also hard when a lot of dubstep only comes physically on vinyl.

I buy digital from boomkat and also buy vinyl although I don't actually have a record player but I love having vinyl and 'collecting' stuff I hope in years to come I will dig out and remember a time or a place that I heard it and be like ah yeah...

I would personally love it if more labels out there were selling physical items directly through the web though I can understand why they don't for the most part.

can't find a whole lot of dubstep at local stores in cd format and i'm too lazy to wait a week to get it from amazon so i usually get them at itunes. if i can every get them on hardcopy ill do that first. always gotta try to have a physical copy but if not digital is the next step.

I buy dubstep exclusively on vinyl, mostly from shops in Soho (BM, SOTU, Sister Ray etc) but do occasionally put in an order at Chemical or Redeye. I have used legal download sites for other kinds of music, and I also occasionally buy CDs.

I think this thread definitely shows up certain people who are clearly part of the so-called 'entitled generation', those who constantly want, or indeed believe they are entitled to new things without actually wanting to pay for them, and actually valuing them very little when they get them. Frankly I think downloading music illegally is downright theft, and I've heard people on here say things in the past like 'since when was art a commodity?, as if that justifies their activities. Well the short answer is, for a bloody long time! And this applies to a time long before pre-recorded music even existed, when many more people purchased sheet music, as well as paintings and books. Artists may not do what they do specifically to make money, but that does not mean they don't deserve to be rewarded for the sheer amount of time they put into their work, mainly for the benefit of others!

If you can't afford to buy your music their is so much legit stuff available via the web for free, just look at the endless number of mixes that appear on this forum everyday, not to mention radio stations like Rinse and Sub-FM that archive nearly all of their shows!

Put simply, there is no credible excuse for illegal downloading.

Rant over.

I'm not sure what's worse, people who outright illegally download all their music, or those self-righteous twats who sit on their high horse and moan about it. Welcome to the 21st century.

Was purely vinyl for a long time, now it's mp3 all the way, simply because I can no longer afford vinyl and storage is a problem. Not defending illegal
file sharing, but it would be interesting to know how many of those people who've never paid a penny for the music sitting on their hard drive would actually
have paid for it if they hadn't been able to get it for free.

Nah, I didn't need to give it much thought at all. It's simple - I don't condone illegal downloads but moaning about it is possibly the most pointless thing you can do.

other than moaning about people moaning about illegal downloads?

The discussion about illegally downloading music has been done to death but if someone is openly talking about never paying for digital then others who may have way more reason to than me have the right to call them out on it.

One may be pointless the other most certainly is theft and I'm not sure there's any ethical framework that would have which is worse up for dispute.

Like you said the illegal downloads/filesharing argument has been done to death and I can't be arsed to get into a discussion about it, but it's been happening for years, it will continue to happen and regardless of what anyone says or does it isn't going to change.

Yep. Unfortunatly its always happened and will only increase doing so. Theres nothing that any of us can do about it really expect not become one of them. I will admit that when I first got into dubstep I would download stuff illegally. However after starting to produce and play out I can honestly say all my downloads are now either free or legal. I realised the error of my ways and that you have to support the artists to keep the artists.
