Yeah, I'm going to take me my wife and my 5 yo daughter w/ training wheels and go ride on congested streets hoping no one is crushed by some arrogant dipshit in a bmw who isn't even likely to stop, just keep driving until the debris works its way out the back of the car.
Had a group of 4 friends went riding. Van hit them all, killed and dragged three, the fourth nearly every bone in her body was broken but somehow survived. Sign me up for that shit!

Random question: What's the average amount of miles / km someone from the UK will put on their vehicle each year? I'm easily going to put 15,000+ miles (~24,000km) on my car this year and I feel like i don't drive TOO much.

the problem is it's way too easy for people to get a drivers license in this country, you also happen to live in one the states filled with the worst drivers and one of the top ranking for fatal accidents

I'm trying to buy a used Prius here, and honestly people are putting over 20k a year on their cars. I've seen countless cars that are three years old with 80k. I'm like, where the fuck are these people driving? You drive all the way around the world at the equator, every year? That is crazy.

@ Deadly, yeah no doubt. Those friends were in Oregon, but yeah, totally true.

well if you have to drive to go literally anywhere outside of your neighborhood, its pretty important. the country was designed around the car, everything you need is miles away for most people who dont live in the city
It's not my point...its that your prices are nothing compared to here. We trust me, we still need to drive too.

^^i think the conversation has taken a turn more in the direction of cities and public transit...
the fact that you live in darlington does obviously mean that you need a car. but you can't really say that gas is absolutely more expensive for you because it comes out to 9 dollars a gallon when you do the conversion... i mean, it might be but neither of us can say because there are so many other factors involved...simplest of which is the fact that you are paid in pounds not dollars.

it doesn't matter what you are paid in - it's how much it is in comparison to your earnings.
most countries in europe have higher taxes on petrol than america, so it's more expensive for europeans than americans.

but even with the price going up in america, you still pay under half the price of petrol in europe.

i'm confused because you're kind of agreeing with me... there are many factors...its not just how much is the tax on gas but also how much is your property tax, how much is car insurance, how much is your license, how far do you have to drive, how often do you actually need to drive, etc etc?
i think it probably is true that in the end europeans pay more to drive but i think its also true that they need to drive less. and the point that i was actually trying to make was that you can't boil it down to "how much tax" or "money per volume of fuel" coz there are so many more variables at play.

yeah, i was talking to a russian friend about this. half the people drive really aggressively or are on their phone the whole time. when traffic is medium to heavy, the entire left lane on the freeway is filled with people tailgating 5 feet way from the next car.

Right, because its uneducated drivers plowing into people are 65 mph, and not drunks.

it's not just drunks causing accidents, there's inexperienced drivers, idiots on cell phones, people just plain not paying attention...
hell i racked up a couple duis in my day and all i had to do was go to a madd impact panel pay a fine and boom license unsuspended
take a look at germany and the process a new driver has to go through for a new license
would love to see that stateside

My dad told me that one time...when I wasn't born yet...gas prices were around 70 cents a gallon...I can't imagine the world that way.

Yeah, I started driving in the $.80 range, AND I had a car that got mid 30's mpg, yes, way back in the day. And let's guess what happened, fuel efficiency went DOWN and gas prices went UP. Priiity nifty equation.

Was just reading that Canada is the US's largest supplier of oil. And that if American consumption stayed at the current level, Canada's oil sands reserve would last 1,800 more years. Fibs?
