Hey allll...
Curious what your methods are in terms of sampled loops vs programming your own drums.
I like to work with sampled breaks/beats, and then go back over everything essentially reprogramming the beats. I like working to sampled beats first, as it gets the ideas out of my head, and then, for the quick and dirty, I'll just high pass filter the break sample loop so just get the tops, and then program in the kick, snare, and any other percussive elements I want to hear.
Thoughts? Different ways to do it? absolute criticisms of my method? lol

Re: Break Sample Loops vs Programmed Drums
I use ableton's drum rack with a bunch of different samples in it (many cut out of breaks) and then will often have a break, sometimes two, in a separate audio track that i chop up/glitch by hand

Feedback/comments always appreciated
Re: Break Sample Loops vs Programmed Drums
Similar to OP. Start with break. Stereo wide the break. Layer with snare and kick single hit samples that are a fair bit louder to stand out. Set the kick and snare to sidechain bass.
In general anyway. There's always room to switch it up to give character
