Bassnectar Dubstep??

Post by DJNARKUS » Sun Apr 10, 2011 11:04 pm

Is it just me or does anyone else think bassnectar really doesnt feel like dubstep?

cause its not... that hippy calls his productions "omnitempo maximalism" or some bs along those lines...

i guess your right... he just makes unnecessarily over the top (maximalism) electronic music at multiple (omni)tempos. bass head just happens to sit around 140 :(

nothing against 140 kick-1 snare-3 dubstep, but Bass head really is an awful song

not really sure what else you would call that particular tune

he has made plenty of other tunes that have nothing to do with dubstep if thats what you mean?

Bass Head is not at 140, it's at 170.

Well he was never one for minimalism, if that's what you mean. I don't consider him a dubstep artist, but he makes some of the best tearout tunes in the genre IMO. As for the song in the OP, I always liked this version more. Got a bit of that "dub" you're looking for.

and to majin... was just quoting the man...
from wikipedia:
He uses the broad spectrum of speeds in electronic genres to create what he calls, "omni-tempo maximalism," and describes it as, "an amalgamation of every sound I've ever heard, mixed with ultra wicked basslines."

sounds vague

That's the point. You'd get it if you'd actually listen to his catalogue. It's a part of his philosophy on music. Even his name is his way of expressing his desire to fill in the whole spectrum along all tempos and capture all kinds of vibes instead of capitalizing on one.

dude ive seen him play out 3 times, i OWN the majority of his catalog... i used to meditate on midrange alldayerryday... in fact the infamous swagger and his remix of ready to rage got me in to dubstep in the first place, but in all honesty the sound got old in roughly a year.

not saying all his music is crap either, his collab with excision "nation" (not sure if it ever came out but was a dub when i was into him) and bomb the blocks are and always will be big tunes :Q:

dont be too quick to judge friend :t:

ps i kinda think his philosophy on music is bs, unlike his views on humanitarianism and philanthropy.

 That Ready 2 Rage remix did the exact same thing for me. And yeah exactly the same it got old. I still love midrange it's just tough sometimes looking for stuff that sounds unique. I'm honestly real disappointed in his new stuff, that wildstyle EP only had 1 or 2 tracks I liked. Rest of it was pretty whack. I'm a total fanboy (in case you didn't know from my username) so I follow him on twitter, and he says he has some tasty melodic stuff on hand he just hasn't released it, so i'm hopeful.

its all too wet and squelchy, or overproduced poo poo for burning man loser fantasia crowd; old men in fuzzy hats, dancing around with no pants on e.

Ive always thought of him more as a dj than as a producer...he always seemed to bring a great vibe and crowd to a dance he was playing out at....his productions, even pre-dubstep, broken beat, dnb, always were super cheesy, surprising given how "cool" he is....his dubstep falls right inline with that.

he is impressive live but not the kind of show i like to see anymore... doesnt really give two shits about beatmatching, serious knob-twister. mainly uses loops and effects to drop one robobanger after another on his ableton setup. at least thats how i remember it...
