I have vinyl, what will I have in 10 years?

Last night I decided to sort out all my vinyl as I have a few oldskool gigs and
we wanted to do an oldskool Dubstep show on our Sub FM show and realised one sad thing. I sorted through about 3000 records going back from 97 to now, had a blast and sorted my tunes out at last. I found all the oldies, Jungle, UKG, Grime, Dubstep and all my 001's of Skull Disco, DMZ, Tech, Hyper, Ghosts plus limited edition's such as Breaktastic on Ghost Limited!

Finally I finished, it took 6hrs and a lot of listening! So I wrapped myself up a fat zoot n went to bed but started to think, what do you have now if you don’t buy vinyl? I mean I collect vinyl, still do and will never stop as long as its on sale, its just something I have to do! I get send 20-30 plus tunes a week yet I still find myself buy records, even tunes I already have n rinsed just cos I want them to hold in my hand.

That’s just me, sad maybe but a vinyl junkie! What I'm very slowly getting to is what the funk do the younger (I'm allowed to say that, I'm over 30...) generation have? I know plenty of CD dj's who just buy wavs or mp3's (idiots but that’s another thread!) but what do they end up with? Are you even bothered that you won’t have a physical collection when your older?

i was saying just this earlier to someone at work. vinyl's an absolute pain in the arse for so many reasons and takes up so much fucking space but i wouldn't have it any other way. nothing compares to owning a piece of vinyl. the feel of it in your hands, the artwork (if you're lucky...seems to be making a comeback of late though), the memories attached, even the smell of it... and that's before you even get to the debatable sound benefits, not to mention the vastly better and more enjoyable experience you get from mixing vinyl with your own two hands

i'm firmly and permanently (i hope) in the sad vinyl junkie camp but fair play to people who prefer digital and think that it's the way forward - and tbh it is in many ways - but it's just not for me

Man I actually had forgotten all the tunes I had n have decided that now I think I'm gonna do a 30mins of Oldskool on my show! Its even excited me so much I'm running home at lunch to do a lil mix for my ipod lol!

Badger you know it bruv! Last night my front room, studio n kitchen were full of records and the smell in my house was literally like walking into Big Apple all those years ago! Brought back some crazy memories of shopping as a kid, trying to get Hatcha to sell me the records under the desk lol!

But on a serious note and the reason why I started this thread... What will the MP3 generation have in 10 years? I cant even get my head around the fact that you wont have anything! I've got a serato laptop FULL of dubs but searching through it I never get the feeling that I actually own something and it got me worried that even I who has plus 3000 records dont have enough and that I'm missing out as I've slowed down to (what Gnome said) only buying something if its really good.... Am I going a lil mad all of a sudden?!

Maybe its just a different way of life. Back in the day it was all about going to record shops, collecting flyers n buying the top 3 records of that weekend! It was a cult thing where as now thats gone, music is worthless but where is that gonna end up?!

I know its probably not the best analagy but here goes:-

I guess you kinda get back what you put in. For example, say you wanted to buy a watch. You could go with the cheap 'Argos' watch that sets you back £50 or you could invest more money and get a spiffing Rolex for £1,000. Obviously they both do the same thing but the are extremely different. After 10 years its highly unlikely the £50 watch will more than likely not even work, let alone have an resale value where-as if you looked after it the Rolex could be worth just as much, if not more. However for some people they may not care about this or have the money to buy the rolex. So they will go for the cheaper option. I kinda see this to be the same as vinyl. You can get roughly 5-6 digital tracks for the same price as a vinyl, some people would rather have this. Some people dont care about the future and just live for now. They may know that in 10 years time the vinyl that they didnt purchase could have still been with them where-as the MP3 that was purchased instead may have been lost many years before.

Like I said, not the best analagy but my point is, some people may not care/have thought about the future when purchasing digital. Some people may not be able to afford it and have no alternative.

I'm from that 'younger generation' and i'm buying vinyl. A few of my mates DJ using digital and they turn up with a black CD case with their MP3 burnt onto CD with titles scribbled on but as badger says "nothing compares to owning a piece of vinyl. the feel of it in your hands"

i think people who buy their tunes on wax will still cherish their collection in 10 years, i certainly will. Despite the pains that come with it, long live vinyl!!

Having said this, as my taste in music developed a little I craved the old classics that you can't really get anywhere, old grime tunes and forgotten UK Garage so I've been buying the stuff i physically can't get anywhere else on vinyl off discogs. Vinyl dents my paycheck too, so that's another aspect of it being not the best way these days. CREDIT CUR-UNNNNNNNNCH. Recently copped a 12" of Syer Barz - Pussy, gotta be my fav grime tune that.

I guess this is the point! For me back in the day it was a way of life, fashion - everyone I knew was a vinyl junkie! Thing is I dont agree with the $ thing cos jesus I only had £15 a week and I still managed it but then I guess if MP3's were about I may have gone that route as I just wanted more and more music!

the kids will say that we're being old fashioned and to be perfectly honest they're probably right. times are moving away from the physical realm into the digital for all the good and bad that brings. now everything is getting smaller and most things don't even exist in any tangible way other than as zeroes and ones on a hard drive somewhere, which in some ways is great but things aren't special any more. i still spend a silly amount on records and tend to buy most things i want when i should probably be more selective, but it's hard to keep spending down when you're trying to keep on top of multiple genres

and la_boxers has a good point too - vinyl is an investment as well as a passion. i know if it comes to it and times are hard i could sell my collection as it's the other black gold - i'd like to see someone do that with an mp3 collection. not that i'd ever want to do that with my most treasured stuff. i'd probably start selling kidneys first

I recently started buying vinyl (last year). For a long time I didn't even have a deck! I just knew that I wanted to have these tracks on wax. I do only have the one deck now, but I aim to get another and a mixer. I wanna be able to show any future children (I'm 21), what I listened to, and I could do that through a mix. I'm sure it'll be the most novel thing ever for them...

nothing compares to owning a piece of vinyl. the feel of it in your hands, the artwork (if you're lucky...seems to be making a comeback of late though), the memories attached, even the smell of it...

I've got one pikey USB turntable rigged up to a decades old stereo stack that belonged to my parents with a cable out of the headphone socket to the input on my speakers.

This has stopped me splashing excessive cash on vinyl in the past but I'll not completely stop buying vinyl because of it. Being a skint student also means I can only spend the cash on the tunes really worth it. The ones I really want. Every time I see a thread like this, it inspires me to save up for some decent decks and a mix and buy more vinyl. I need to pull my finger out and actually start getting some of those classic 12"s that I'll be able to play back 10, 20, 30 years from now and think "money bloody well spent".

Vinyl is top dog, but unfortunately in todays day and age, it's horrendously in-efficient in every sense, this is clear considering nearly every DJ in dubstep has now switched to CDJ's/Serato.

Another thing, in ten years maybe half your vinyls are a bit scratched, crackle like fuck and you've lost half the sleeves; I'm assuming a lot, but this might be the case for a lot of people... For those who bought mp3's, that tune will still sound as crisp as it ever did.

I completely agree there's nothing like owning a piece of music physically, but it isn't always the best idea in terms of longevity.

I just got decks in september so I've not been buying vinyl for that long. So I think for me I don't have the nostalgic attachment to vinyl, the smells & feel don't do too much for me. I just fucking love mixing with vinyl, I also enjoy the fact that it is continuing a tradition of dance music culture! I also got decks to get those old classics which are never going to be released on digital! However the worst thing about vinyl is if it gets scratched, your fucked! Especially if its a rare piece, but I guess it teaches you to look after your things! I think people's love for vinyl & possibly other physical mediums is a reflection of people's attempts to not turn everything into 0s & 1s, to keep things in the real physical world & not digitize absolutely everything we do!

It's a shame less and less people are playing vinyl out, most gigs I play at I'm the only one playing vinyl. I know there are still loads of DJs still playing vinyl, and I can understand why people use digital, because I feel like I cant play the full selection of what I want becasue I either have unreleased stuff, free stuff, or just digital releases. Also the amount of times I've sworn that I'm switching to CDs because I'm lugging my records home To hopefully try and keep vinyl going me and my mates started SimplyVinyl which is a vinyl only night It's mainly D&B headliners but I'm hoping to take it more towards 120-140 bpm stuff. Still loads of really good DJs playing vinyl. My personal favourite is Donga (Well Rounded) who has so many obscure but brilliant records that I cant even start to comprehend! Also I love the thought that when I have kids they'll find my records hidden away somewhere and I can bore them to death with stories of "the good old days"
