Bought them years before I learnt to mix or had a computer, just wanted to hear at home what was being played at squat parties, you couldn't hear it anywhere else. These days you bring your tunes on a stick (wavs ofcourse) and if it gets pigged and the (shared) laptop is taken, so what.

Why is DMZ01 and early Big Apple records worth loads now then?

Unless the genre dies, value is only going to stay the same / increase.

To most kids in the punk scene it's more of an economy thing. The logic is kinda cracked. But basically... short songs = little space = 7 inches instead of CD, because CDs are capable of far more and would be wasted on 5 or 10 minutes of music.

And there's nothing but super limited runs these days because no one is buying shit and labels are closing left and right. If punk is keeping anything alive, it's tape, I'd say.

Some records - basically, classic tunes in styles that people continue to give a shit about - might be worth loads in ten or twenty years, but all of the okay-but-not-classic tunes in styles that noone really cares about anymore (or that aren't fashionable) are pretty much dead weight as far as selling stuff on is concerned. And if you do decide to offload part of your collection then I'm guessing you're not going to shift the small number of stone cold classics and keep the fillers...

In any case, going on about resale value seems like missing the point - I don't buy tunes to plan for my retirement, I buy them cos I want to listen to them...
