New Here - Looking for some constructive criticism

Post by Manic Harmonic » Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:05 am

Hi, my name is Jamie aka Manic Harmonic. I'm relatively new to dubstep, I'm just starting to incorporate it into my music and I'm here to learn about production techniques and etc., as well as more underground dubstep as I'm only scraping the surface... the majority of the stuff I find is cliche and boring. I like the Skrillex, Excision, etc type of stuff but it gets old real quick. I've been listening to Silkie and James Blake a lot lately... anyway, I don't know if i would classify any of them as strictly dubstep but here's some tracks.

Android Respirator - This is the most recent one, the first song I've made after making the switch from Garageband to Logic. This is my first attempt at actually trying to "Master" a song as well, so I would appreciate feedback particularly on that aspect.

Platinum Prison - This one's made in Garageband and hasn't been mastered yet. Mostly just a soundtrack-style instrumental but there's a dubstep drop in the middle of it.
Soundcloud

Ghost in the Headlights - Not really dubstep, but some definite influence. The last song I made in Garageband. Again unmastered.
Soundcloud

Apologize - Remix of Apologize by OneRepublic . First dubstep song I made in Garageband. Unmastered
Soundcloud

Welcome to my World - Remix of the song by Dean Martin. Made in Garageband, Unmastered.

Let me know what you think, I would really appreciate some tips, as I don't have many friends that are musicians/ produce music. Thanks.

For "Android Respirator", that's pretty damn good man. I would EQ the high pitch synth because it gets a bit piercing at 0:51 and a few other spots. Just keep practicing mastering or try to do it as you go along and you will get better at it. So far, so good.

For Platinum Prison, the main bass when it drop sounds good, but could use a sub layered underneath it. Also look up sidechaining as it can really help your drums punch through the mix.

I don't have time to listen to all of your songs now, but keep up the good work. Your actual production is great, just keep practicing mixing and mastering. :)

I listened to the first track..Im completely new to all this as well, just wanted to say I loved the arrangement and the actual sounds..I felt it was missing some LFs and midLFs...sometimes the first things to be cut away when getting the mix to sound good on smaller systems..the highs were a little fizzy, that might be what your using to master, over compression can sometimes do that

but nice tune nonetheless..I hope I get sometime to give the others a listen :W:

thanks i appreciate it. i had a lot of trouble with that airy synth sound, i couldn't the high notes to quiet down a little bit. any suggestions? as far as sidechaining goes i used a lot of it in android respirator, mostly compressors and noise gates. i'd like to import my garageband songs into logic so i can use some sidechaining on them, but every time i try it i can't get them to work. :? and to kcearl thanks for the input as well, ill try to address the lows. i bumped them up a bit when i mixed it in my car (i can't hear the bass in my headphones so i have to use my car for the bass part), but i threw a mb compressor on after that and didn't double check that before i bounced it. thanks for the input.
