MicroKorg Vs. AKAI MPK49

Post by TheDON » Sat Apr 16, 2011 8:45 pm

Am new here, and trying figuring out whats the best midi keyboard controller for dubstep. Im also using FL9 on 32 vista
iv search somethings up. and this what i got!

Up First!

AKAI MPK49 -

AKAI MPK49 $410 new
49-key, semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch and full-sized keys
8 360 degree rotary dials each with 3 banks = 24 total
12 MPC style pads, velocity and pressure sensitive, 4 banks = 48 total
8 sliders each with 3 controller banks = 24 total
note repeat and arpeggiator
8 assignable switches with 3 banks each = 24 total
MMC/MIDI Start Stop transport buttons
USB powered.

great all in one midi controller/keyboard although you do pay a bit, typical price is around $410 new. Also as someone who has owned an MPC I can testify that the drum pads do note respond like an MPC, although they are the closest out of all the keyboard controllers I looked at, apart from that I can't fault it.

THEN!,

KONG MicroKorg $415 new

With 37 keys and 128 user-rewritable programs
Oscillator 1 features a total of 71 waveforms
64 exclusive DWGS waveforms
Four filter modes are available, offering -12 dB (2-pole) low pass, high pass and band pass configurations plus an extra steep -24 dB (4-pole) low pass setting
Two classic ADSR envelope generators and two MIDI-syncable LFOs provide the power to shape your sounds
Mod Wheel to control filter cutoff or pulse width, using an LFO to control panning or amp level, etc

So there both at the same price! One has pads other one doesn't but they say the pads are just shit on MPK49!
I think i could use them both on FL9 as midi controller but not sure with MicroKorg,
So whats your take on this guys?

unless you want a real synth get the mpk. the mpk is going to be better if your mainly working in a daw obv...

but if for some reason you want an analog synth or to be able to make sounds right from the unit then get the korg

hmmm, fuck this is gonna get harder then i thought.
Well, I don't do anything live. Just sit home, remix and create.
See I already make dubstep but just with a mouse and my computer keyboard. I just want to make my life easier.
And Im more on filthy dubstep. such as Datsik, Excision and downlink...

What did you want to use it for exactly?

EDIT: I just read your post properly I reckon youll be better with the mpk. I got one recently and its great the pads are pretty bad but theres a simple mod to fix them anyway.

With the synth you'd have the bonus of being able to create sounds, and because it's NOT ANALOG, there will most-likely be other software synths that can achieve the same.
All in all it should be just like any standard softsynth (VST) you've had your hands on, but in hardware.
Take into consideration that not all synths have digital support, and need an input/preamp to be put through.

A midi-controller only triggers existing parameters inside your programs, but you will have to configure the MIDI which some experience as a pain as well.
This does allow you to do live recordings of you playing midi notes, adjusting parameters (Wobble rate in dubstep for ex.), and the pads might make percussion more fun and intuitive to do.

That being said, I think you'd be better off investing in a Midi-controller first.

Op seeing as your in FL9. If you were to get the synth which you can make sounds on, you would also need a audio interface to record the audio coming from the keyboard

i could have gotten my mpk at guitar center for $330. thats including tax. their advertised price if 400. but they do a price match thing if you buy the three year warranty. (if you can find it anywhere cheaper they will match it) sam ash advertised for 330. but i got the three year warranty for 70 dollars. so that put me back at 400.
