Damn, love the guitar. Very nice song, clean production, uuuuuh, yeah pretty much great. The drums sound a little too upfront to me, but that's just based on my preference. Good job on this.

i love the little bits of percussion that are panned left and right, they are subtle but add so much to the overall effect of the song. beautiful clean production. could you run me through what you used to record and affect the guitars?
Feedback and advice would be greatly appreciated! I will return the favour!

I thought tunes in here would be pretty harsh...Im enjoying hearing the melodic stuff...very nice elements in this

Mix wise Id say its spot on..arrangement wise I found the extreme panning a little distracting, but Im easily distracted so the wife tells me

good job all round :)

http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/prod ... W45HB.html - This is pretty much the acoustic guitar used in that track except mine has an internal mic. Tangelwood make obscenely good guitars.
http://www.saein.co.kr/2007/eg/wrl510.php - This is similar to the electric I use, they don't make my model anymore, and mine's been heavily customized. Shine are a great make, they're a pretty small company, I think they only have like 300 guys, but the way I see it, Ibanez and companies like that can afford to make mistakes on their guitars, they make so many it just doesn't matter to them, but for a small company like Shine it's pretty important they get it right and they do.

I'm not really sure what was used to record the guitar to be honest because I record using my old guitar tutor's gear at his studio - never really looked into what he's using, all I really know is that he uses a lot of high end behringer gear. He knows a lot more about gear and recording than I do, I'm not really a gear head. I never really found it that interesting, I'd rather be playing than reading up on the difference between a tube amp and... whatever the hell that other type of amp is.

For the acoustic parts a lot of it was taken one note at a time or one bar at a time because it's in a few different tunings [The most prominent being C#-G#-E-F#-B-D# (low to high) if you're interested] and nearly every note you hear is a harmonic, hence the weird soft sound. We used a POD effects pedal for the electric, and his own custom compressor on both. I layered in some synths I made in fruity loops under the electric, like, the electric guitar is maybe 30% real 50% synth and 20% sampled from my own one shots. The acoustic parts are a bit more 'real', just heavily cut and pasted, there's a sampled affected telecaster running under it that's barely audible. I've tried recording purely 'real' parts and just using those but they sound naff as hell and never really fit in, the string buzz and accidental sounds mark it as being too real and it ends up sounding detached from the song and doesn't really fit with the electronic elements. Equally I've tried doing purely synthetic stuff but that always ends up sounding really horrible, like a 70s theramin solo in the middle of a led zepplin set... only worse. Most of the reverb was added in Reason. Because it's reverb is orgasmic. I just EQ'd it all in Fruity Loops and used it's delay bank 2.

Sorry if it's ultimately disappointing to discover the 'real' playing is so heavily quashed with processing and layering of synthetic sounds. I hope that helps a bit, but like I said, I'm really not a gear head, and a lot of what I do is probably incredibly amateur, pointless or counter productive, and there are probably much better and easier ways to record guitar and make it sound good than the route I took.

You're not the first person to have said that :P

I dunno, it's the one thing I can't lose really, I like that level of movement from left to right in drums as well as the sort of forward motion they make, hard to describe I guess, but yea, I guess it is kind hit or miss really :/

Anyway, ty for the feedback guys, much appreciated as always.

Enjoyed the idea of the tune if not the tune.
I like all the work you have done with the guitars and background swells.
I`m just not a fan of this "world music" sort of vibe.

Respect for the effort though

sorry dude, didn`t mean it to be harsh.

There`s just a sound I`m not a big fan of.
It`s all linked to the guitar.
Sounds good n all, just not my cup of tea.
I`m always leaning to the psychedelic side of things.
If things are too linear I tend to search for things in the track or certain things stand out too much for me.

Np man, just got images people with dreadlocks surrounded by books about 'holistic medicine' listening to my stuff right after they're done with 'The Ultimate Whale & Dolphin Music Compilation 4' (which can be disheartening for obvious reasons :P)

HOHO

not what I meant :D

there used to be a late night show here that was live footage from a landmark.
Can`t remember the name.
So you`d turn it on and it was like 2 - 3 hours of that sort of chilled guitar music and live footage from say outside St Paul's cathedral.
The music certainly set the tone of the program.

Do you know the Global Psychedelic series of cds?
Well when they first started coming out, lots of what they released was a similar style.
Laid back, guitar orientated, ambient music.

... Oops

... In that case, I fully believe in holistic healing practices, dreadlocks look wonderful - like wearing an octopus for a hat, but better and more stylish - and I love whales but not in a sexual way... except sometimes maybe in a slightly sexual way, but mostly not in a sexual way... although I have seen some very seductive whales.

Not a real big fan of this genre or song really. I kinda like my music to be beautiful chaos, this was just beautiful. :) great music for sleeping at night tho when you cant take any more synths/wobbles and screams!
