Chord Space Alternative
Hello chappies,
I've always loved the chordspace plugin, it is great for when I want to sound like I know the first thing about next level music theory. Today, I tried to use two of them in the same project and I think I jacked my shit up. I think chordspace is quite old, and they just abandoned it? So it doesn't handle multithreading so well.
So, any freeware alternatives with the same type of range and playability as chordspace, that ch'all can recommend? Any reasonably priced alternatives. I do love chordspace...

Rando^2, put out your vst that you want to be played by tonespace. Then put out tone space. In the vst, go to that little gear icon in the upper left of the vst wrapper. On the first page there, there is a midi in/midi out. Select port 1 for midi in.RandoRando wrote:is there a way to take the midi that tonespace plays and send into to another vst? im on FL if it helps
Now go to the vst wrapper of tonespace, same shit, set the out port to 1. Now when you play into tonespace, the midi will flow out to your vst instrument.

Re: Chord Space Alternative
I just installed this, but am having trouble with it. I can't get midi notes into this thing. I can click through the chords, which is dooooope, but can't get notes into it...

It would be easier to study the music theory. Its really not that hard and it helps a lot.

Got midi notes into this btw, and yeah, would help a lot, but not easier, for me at least.

But I'd say this would be a great tool for learning music theory. It's like when people complain about spell checkers and say that nobody will know how to spell anything any more because the computer does it for them. I've actually found the opposite. Having a little red line come up when I spell something wrong has helped me learn the correct spellings for things that would perhaps have otherwise gone overlooked.lowlif3 wrote:It would be easier to study the music theory. Edit: Hmm, having trouble setting up the midi out in ableton. As soon as I drop it on a midi track the midi out turns into an audio out. Feel I'm missing something obvious...
Re: Chord Space Alternative
I think it has it's own little synth in there, so it will put out audio. It has a bunch of little configuration drop downs on the right there, some are interdependent, so it can be hard to get everything right. Like you select one thing on one menu, and then the other menus don't have certain options.
Definitely need to fiddle with it for a while. I was having a hard time with it, but I think I got it now. Just fiddle!
And yeah, I agree brocheese, this is a great learning tool. Ideally, I'd love to shred maj 7 add 5's like it was writing my name, but
music theory and chords in general are awfully confusing for me.
Can't stand that the same thing can have 4 different names, just adds so much unnecessary complexity.

Re: Chord Space Alternative
you realize if you tune your synth however many semi-tones you are off of c (for major) or a (for minor) [example - your song is in f# minor, tune your synth to -3 semitones], will then allow you to play just white keys and always stay in key? from there start counting 1-3-5 to start making chords, then experiment.
maybe i don't understand the other functions of this plug in, but to learn basic music theory, all you have to do is be able to count - not trying to sound like a douche.

Gonna have to try harderbassinine wrote:not trying to sound like a douche.
Re: Chord Space Alternative
i was just pointing out that almost everyone thinks there's more to music theory than there actually is. other than that, i thought my advice was pretty good.

						Re: Chord Space Alternative
Your advice is pretty good. And there really is less to music theory than it appears! I've learned more music theory in the last year than in the previous 15 years! And it is always like, duh, it's that simple... But the chord naming system, and the way that chords relate to the scale and key... still confuses the F out of me.

YOU GUYS! YOU HAVE TO GO INTO THAT LITTLE WINDOW IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT, AND CHANGE IT FROM THE SYNTH TO VST HOST. IN THE LITTLE WINDOW THAT SAYS MIDI, IN THE BOTTOM LEFT, IN THE LITTLE WINDOW, IN THE TONESPACE VST.

Duh, that was only like, the first thing I tried BONEHEAD. Still doesn't work though innit. Maybe it aint fully compatible with Ableton?RandoRando wrote:YOU GUYS! Re: Chord Space Alternative
I'm pretty sure it is. Just need to select all the right options in all the drop downs, and I'm sure, do some proper sending and receiving in the inarticulate live mixer.
