Do yall ever not mix down?

I tend to 'crudely mix' as I go along, making sure the master peaks somewhere between -3 and -6 dB. Save and copy that project file and then I 'finetune' that.

I just crudely mix
Anyone got tips for muddy low-end? I find a lot of the time my bass doesn't seem to fit in the mix that well, it is just muddy. I know about cutting out low end from things like hats, and taking the sub off the kick drum, is it just a matter of finding the right bass?

im not good at mixing by any means but i can get something to sound okay. i usually roughly mix as i go along so i at least have an idea in how my sounds will work together. then once im done i give it a final mix where i fine tune everything and make sure everything sits nicely.

Sometimes I will mix down as I go other times I just get the whole tune finished then I give it a mixdown.

Try cutting some frequences of the bass between 100 and 200 hz?tavravlavish wrote:I just crudely mix![]()

Re: Do yall ever not mix down?
It really depends on how the track sounds. I cant say that i've sat and made sure that each sound was at a certain level at the end of the track. Each different drum hit in my arsenal of samples will have a different dynamic to the next so to say that EVERY snare has to peak at -10db or w/e is just bullshit. My snares peak at whatever sounds best whilst keeping the master -3db or below. Personally I'd say thats the best way to mixdown rather than using 'Industry standard' guidelines created by an industry that also produced the likes of justin bieber, miley cyrus and the jonas brothers.

not that weird... i started mixing cause there were certain things i could simply NOT DO without tweaking...
not being able to tweak ur sounds limits u heavily... especially when u start layering things... u end up being unable to add anything to ur prods after a very short time...
for a while i was struggling getting perfect sounds out of unmixed pastiches, then i became a knob freak, trying hard to get whatever shitty sample i chose to sit properly against another... ended up realizing both are AS HARD and not always rewarding when used independently...
so now im kinda back to my old ways, putting beats together by guiding myself with their initial sonic qualities.. but its ALWAYS necessary for me to make a little room in the mix...
producing is a mixing game nowadays.. i really think that... and mixing in the beginnings, was very close to producing... i think they're the same, essentially... so no, ur not weird.. and yes, mixing down is important, as long as it is useful..
i dont think u HAVE to mix down tho.. im just saying the sounds will tell u what they need...

I've heard that from a couple of big names. I keep meaning to do it but I'm already so sick of my tracks by the time I get round to final tweaks that I can't bare to leave them on like that.Debaser1 wrote:+1000000000paravrais wrote:Yeah I quite enjoy mixing too. I love every aspect of it to be honest - regardless of it being dubstep, rock, melodic piano music, garage, whatever. I love how it all starts as an idea or an improvisation or a simple loop, and it can end up being a journey over 4 minutes or so. Mixing is amazing. So many different ways to production.
I remember in an interview with Loefah he said that when he mixes, he leaves the track playing all day as he goes about his activities round the house, and after a while you start to notice stuff in the mix sticking out or whatever. Really clever idea I reckon.
