looking to get more advanced in my producing

Sadly i have been producing with garageband on and off for about 6 months, and with the last two months or so i have used massive as a vst within garageband and i love it. First of all, i have been told that i should look into logic because it will be an easier transition knowing garageband so well to pick up logic. I love massive and i wanna keep it, but i was wondering what other vst's i should look into. I've been looking into ohmicide, izotope ozone, and gladiator 2. Not including logic, i would be willing to spend roughly five-hundred dollars on other vst's, and i was hoping that someone could provide me with some suggestions, or some websites that could lead me in the right direction. Before you trash me for using garageband haha just listen to my latest song so you know i'm not total shit when it comes to producing, thank you! and thanks for whatever help i receive.

but seriously just look up some freeware FX and Synths...nowhere near the paid stuff, but some are really useful

You already have a VST that you know, I assume, keep using it until you are limited by it. No reason to go buy a bunch more.

Yeah listen dood, just get yourself logic, and I hope that you already own massive, if not really think about buying it, and if you are thinking about getting a second NI product, I'd recommend getting Komplete, it has more than you could use in a lifetime. I mean that literally. You could work 20 hours a day for the rest of your life and never see the edge of komplete.

But really you don't need all that. Just a good daw like logic, really. It's fun to play with a bunch of different tools, and I've spent a tun on them over the years, but really, production is 99% mental, so just get a good daw, and set your mind to work.

We periodically run a freeware contest here, where we produce tracks with just a free synth, and a couple of free fx/processors. Amazing results are achieved because music comes from your heart and mind, not from the tools.

I listened to your track and it sounds pretty good I'd say stick with massive and just see what you can make out of it. I'm not on good speakers so I can't judge yours but I'd say learning to mix properly helps a producer at any level sound much better. Unfortunately I'm still learning this process

I have no knowledge when it comes to macs and what you can or can't use but, I'd say freeware is the way to go because there is so much to chose from and sometimes here is some pretty quality ones.
Camel crusher the free version of camel phat is a pretty good distortion unit, all the distortion capabilities of the paid version except it doesn't have a filter, flanger, and something else maybe phaser? idr I only use it for distortion anyways. What is kind of cool with the paid though is that you can assign your lfo to the filter and make wobbles through the effect plugin instead of massive. I hear TAL bitcrusher is good as well.

Google kvraudio it's a site that ranks vsts and things they have both paid and freeware.

Also future_untold put a pack together with reaper and some good effect pluggins I highly recommend. Even if you don't use reaper, the effects are worth a try. http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.p ... 3393&hilit

i was reading up on komplete and it sounds completely legit but also way out of the league of someone like me haha. is it you get all those plugins like absynth, massive (which i bought a few months ago) and all the other things on top of a DAW, or you get all those to run on say logic?

You really don't need it though, tech won't make your music more advanced, especially if you're already using massive, if your sound design doesn't get better in massive it's your fault.

This and I guarantee if you get a higher end DAW than garage band life will be easier. (not knocking gb)

haha yeah i have no intention of getting komplete, my main focus is just obtaining a better DAW that can acheive more than just the basics as garageband does. I notice myself learning more and more about massive every time i use it and i'm extremely happy with the synth. I think i'm going to look into freeware, buy logic, and continue using massive and if in the future i need to improve my software, i'll do so

Would be a good idea to get Logic Express for the next step. I got a copy off ebay for £75. Cheap as chips. Can always upgrade to Pro at a later date if need be.

How are the economics on that? Same total price? Cause I think you're going to end up upgrading anyway.

Yeah pretty much the total price. I got express as i only had 2GB RAM, doubt i could flex the space designer much with those specs. 75 quid is a bargain tho, you don't really miss out on much. Did you ever get logic nowaysj? I remember you askin on here about using an older version on a G4 or somethin?

Yeah, never did it. That g4 would have drowned! Very (VERY) happy in the pc world

Yeah I hear ya. One thing I have struggled with Logic is general beat making. Never used Ultrabeat due to it trimming 8ms off samples and find using the piano roll with EXS24 a but uninspiring. Can go back to FL 5 on my old pentium 4 and knock out beats in no time. Guess i should invest in a decent drum machine

Honestly back in the day, I bought logic (for $700, it's gotten a lot cheaper!) when it was on the pc, and found beatmaking to be boring and a chore in there. Thats when I got started with fl, when it was JUST a step sequencer. Always had more fun in FL! But I would make beats in fl, and bring them in as wavs into logic.

First and foremost, kudos to you sir for playing with what you have. Once you realize the limitations of your current software, that's when you begin to look further. I would second the notion that Logic would be a great move for you. It's an excellent DAW and very similar to Garage Band. In regards to other plugins, don't bother. Get Logic, learn it inside and out. Most the plugins in Logic truly are amazing, well-crafted units. Once you get bored of them, and understand them all, then splash out and get something else
