Storms in America

Why do people insist on building wooden homes or living in trailer parks (neither of which are known for their strength in high wind situations) in places where tornados et al are a frequent occurence?

No money. No resources. ''It won't happen to me.''

So you're saying a combination of poverty and naïvity?

It's always amused me how the states traditionally affected by the storms (tornado alley I think it's referred to as) are ones that are seen as more staunchly conservative/religious. So you'd have a load of people who believe that God punishes the wicked being fucked up by force majeure on an almost regular basis. Maybe they see it as a purge of the heathens.

I suspect there's an element of that in justifying that. If they don't lose their life in one of these natural disasters, its because they weren't supposed to. If they do, well they'd dead so they can't really argue about whether they deserved it.
My understanding re: shit building materials is that it is cheaper to rebuild a simple wooden framed house than to build one properly in the first place, but that does seem a little counterintuitive.

Re: Storms in America
The reason that homes are built of wood in the US is simple.
We've got loads of trees.
The middle of this country is a strange place, nevertheless.

Re: Storms in America
People living in trailers are poor. I'm sure if they had the means they'd sort it out.
But that's pointless in this case. These tornados were F-4 and F-5s. They're capable of ripping concrete from the ground, throwing cars 100's of feet in the air, and leveling brick buildings like they're made out of straw.
you're talking of winds stronger than category 5 hurricaines... like 225-325mph

Re: Storms in America
check at :30 seconds in.
doesnt matter what you're living in.. if you get a direct hit you're probably gonna die
The reason this week has been so deadly was the number of tornados there have been. I think they said there's been over 350 in the past week alone

Really strange areas getting impacted though. Not to common having F5's in Georgia.
