Freak Flag - Riptide. Tripped out homegrown psy-dubstep

Post by FreakFlag » Sat May 07, 2011 1:32 am

So I've lurked on these forums for a while, but never joined up for a couple of reasons. Anyways, I joined up and I'll introduce myself with a tune, fresh of the press 20 minutes ago. Hope you like!

Great sound design! Really original tune. I love the dub reggae feel that is poking through, really tripped out and good!

From a mix down standpoint I have a few points. First off I think the snare needs to cut through the mix and hit a bit harder. Also overall I think the leveling on the synths/midrange bass took but slightly too much room especially the lead synth. I personally would like to hear a bit more drums.

But the mixdown is still really clean and everything sounds nice, I just think a bit of the levelling could be improved.

I do really enjoy this song quite a bit though great job!

Also wanted to mention that this reminded me of shpongle quite a bit as well, I feel like you have to know who shpongle is if you are making music like this.

Hahaha, yeah, i know shpongle very well :) I make this music for the psy/festival scene, not the dubstep scene. Shpongle is the tip of the iceberg, though a pretty fucking good one at that.

Thanks for the tips! My room isn't treated, and I am more used to producing psytrance and minimal than dubstep. I will definitely fix the snare - i was thinking about that, layering a punchier bottom end snare on top of that whimpy clap. As for the bass and the leads... I'll remove some frequencies where I can. I think I should be able to make room for everything. As for drums... you're right! Drum programming isn't my strong suit, so I don't really know where to start sometimes. I try to create syncopated drum flourished, often recreating rudiments and such, but it still sounds sterile and inhuman, and i end up deleting them.
