How Do I get This Bass sound?

Post by gormor » Tue May 10, 2011 3:39 am

This may be obvious, but I didn't see it immediately so i decided I might as well ask cause that's what people here are for right?
A lot of songs produce an ear shattering bass when the bass comes in after a build up.
IE; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHwfI5stmJA - 14 seconds in
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIhZLr5B8kE - 28 seconds in

etc, any ideas how to get this sound

I'm on FL studio but if you put it in basic DAW terms i should be able to figure it out

That is a talking bassline generated by applying a formant filter to a synth. If you're just using FL, then try opening up 3xOsc, setting it to 2 sawtooth waveforms, slightly detuned and with a bit of Stereo Detune (SD), and dropping the root note down an octave (see where it says C5? Right click on where it says C6). Route that 3xOsc into a mixer channel, and on that mixer channel load up a Fruity Love Philter. At the very base level, you have got the beginnings of the sound you want.

Now, change parameters on the 3xOsc/filter until you get the sound you like. I'd advise on the Love Philter, to start with anyway, to cycle through the Presets until you find one that is starting to sound like the what you're after, then messing with it to fine tune it.

There is a list of bassline resources here which might be of assistance for further reading - http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.p ... 6#p2204163

The above description is a very basic way of doing things, and no way is guaranteed to have you sounding like either of the songs you've posted immediately. I'd encourage you to try everything, read everything and experiment with changing things. Best way to learn.

I'm pretty sure this is amplitude modulation - similar to frequency modulation but instead of modulating the frequency (pitch) of the waveform the modulator wave is modulating the amplitude (volume) of the carrier.

To do this in Reason I usually open a Thor synthesiser, use a square waveform in osc 1 and a saw wave in osc 2, then turn the octave of oscillator 2 up anywhere between 2 and 6 octaves above the square waveform.

Get a nasty melody going. Mix the oscillators so that you can only hear the square waveform playing but turn up the AM parameter on the left panel of the Thor synthesiser.

Not sure how to do this in Fruity - I guess a vsti might be in order?

hope this helps,

G

Jeez. There is this "how to make this sound" thread, the one right below it is a "how to make that bass sound" thread and the thread below it is a "how to make an acid sound" thread. Does no one search anymore?

All I hear is noise. Noise does not = power.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Is this any different to just playing a lower note on the keyboard?

depending on the synth... but i wouldn't think it would make a difference on 3xOsc. unless he's dropping the octave on only one of the oscillators.

The talking bass isn't at 28 seconds in the first clip and doesn't appear at all in the second clip.

This is just a synth with one oscillator playing way higher octave than the other... usually sounds better when achieved using amplitude modulation.

Sounds a little like Chrome in Massive, that sort of "drill gun" effect on War Bot at least.
