Live sets- with abelton/maschine

Post by soosh21 » Thu May 12, 2011 7:22 pm

Just wondering if some folk could help me out. I have quite a few live gigs coming up, and need some pointers. I use abelton, i have an apc 40, kp3, maschine and i want to use them all together. Im happy producing with abelton, but playing live havent figured it out yet.

Whats the best way to structure a set- i have around 10-15 of my tunes to play. Would you cut up the bounced masters, and then arrange them so they can be triggered as scenes? The other thing is the bpms vary, when you've warped all the loop points to fit- how can you keep everything in time if you have to increase, decrease your bpm. When you first do your warping to fit, do you warp everything at the bpm of your first tune? Ive dj'ed with serato for years so dont have a clue how abelton works dj wise. I dont just want to do a dj set with abelton either.

Ideally i want to trigger some of the tunes as scenes with the apc, and others played live using my maschine as plug in live. Could i have 3-4 instances of mashcine in live, arm each track and when i want to play it. I get the whole scene thing, its more creating smoothe ish transitions.... I know the kp3 could be handy inbetween transitions and i could increase the bpm there possiblsy? Is it best to have the kp3 as a send or on your master when live.

Sorry for the hundred questions! Also whats the best buffer setting to have, so i dont get glitches etc....what would folks put on the master? Any other info muchos appreciated. Finally, i have serato...and would like to dj some tunes in the set to mix it up a little. From a soundcard point of view could i play both independently/ or using the bridge, as long as i have enough inputs on my soundcard, or would there be a conflict in audio? Ive had a good look at youtube, but most the vids where some hard house dude or something similar and i couldnt handle it! Cheers! And sorry if my questions aren't clear....

Welcome to the headfuck world of playing out live. There are so many options you'll have to just choose some that appeal to you and experiment with them. Practice and practice till you feel comfortable and have a game plan. I use to do some instrumental hip hop stuff live using Live. My approach was to play different sections of the song at different times. I had an MPD24 and used that with a hardware delay pedal, midi keyboard and virus rack.

For example Id play:

An intro (cut up sample or something)
Then 16 bars of drums
Bass line
A sample melody
Tweak some delay shit

I'd have deactivated clips in my song where I would be playing over the top with the live part. I'd switch midi track channels using the pads etc.
Worst part was waiting for the next song project to load. I know you can pull songs into other songs to make one big one but my CPU couldn't handle that and I don't really like the idea of bouncing the whole lot into audio clips.

Worked ok, course there are better designed Live midi controllers now. Good luck!
