@tiger widow the sub bass modulation fits perfectly, sweet piano melodies going on

@z6z hard snare, liking the voicey ambients going on in the background, id take that out before the drop though to give it more of an effect!

@bugsky 1.00 onwards im in the clouds, awesome chill tune, the pads are great

@sonic arts mate, big credit to your creativity, one funky tune, sweet mastering too

here my track, some sweeps need adding here and there, but ill get round to that at the end, let me know what could be added/improved :)

oprs wrote:psythe- get ta stepping, i like it. not reallly digging the phased synth rising and falling but preferences are preferences, kinda heavy, you done a good job on the call and answer synth style you got going on. think just 2 uses of the get ta stepping would have been sufficient though.

specimen- really muddy sounding, think the beat could use a little variation in the actual verse. i like the drop, but the synth doesnt go with it.

dm- i mean its really basic, but your getting the gist i suppose, i would change up the deeper chords they just dont flow. and throw some change ups and what not. but i mean you got the bare necessities down.

kid strange- i like the intro, has personality - nice groovin beat and all, drop is very nice. really dig this tune, laid back and very chill, super sub whats not to love. nice man

t-thoughts- drum need a little more punch to them, but as stated above its nice and chill man. just bring up the drums a little bit so they aren't so behind everything else. i really like the change in drums you pull though. really unique almost dnb sounding at a slower pace

z6z- not really alot to say, i mean. i dig it but it needs work. the synth you got going constantly kills the vocals behind it, nice use of synths though thank god it isnt yoi yoi yoi

bugsky- i like the intro very trancey, kick drums a little weak. but atleast your synth isnt overpowering everything. its a nice medium, i like the atmosphere you got going alot. just bring up the kick drum a little bit and you got a banger. id throw it in a mix for sure

sonic- hahah i love the nice piano work, everything sounds pretty good, the percs need a little working over but so far so good. not feeling the synth though, sounds like a youtube wobble, everything else is good. i think give that a little working over and the perc and you will be smooth

well after criting the entire page
here have a free download, bout to put it in the dubs section

so the guys get a read

luke- i like the high synth in the intro, some parts dont go together but i think its only for a split seconds. i think you could do something cooler with the build, its just a generic kick build ya know? i like the track. really uplifting. some of the perc sits a little low, but it really doesn't affect the song.

Luke: :corndance: That's one catchy melody, and the vibrato's a nice touch. The subbass is way too soft, tho, I can barely hear it. Anyways keep it up and this song will be fire.

oprs: Are you flicking a lighter in the intro? :h: Its not really my style, but its an interesting track and the atmosphere is dope. I feel like you could have more going on, but then again, I think minimal is what you're going for. And the name fits it perfectly :W:

Sonic: Siiick. I love the rhythms and the glitches you added to the classical stuff. The bass doesn't really stand out enough, but for your first time trying dubstep type bass, its pretty good. Try coming up with a more distinguished bass part that flows more with the track, cause everything else you got going on is fucking awesome!

Here's another WIP of mine. The composition is basically done, but still gotta do some mixing tweaks.. Please tell me if you hear any parts in the song where levels don't sound balanced:

@fluid, The kick isn't sitting up in the mix. The synth is absorbing most of the mix. I'd suggest lowering it a lot, and listening as you turn it up in the mix until it sounds like everything is coming from the same distance. I'm liking the crazy synth lines though. Somewhat different to anything else I've heard before.

@LukeR. Lead synth is really really loud. I think it could add a bit more dynamic to your track if you dropped it a couple of db. The hat hit coming in on the right is also a bit too loud. But the sub bass line and chiptune style is rockin. Quite liking the groove.

@ sonic arts. Sick mate. Fantastic. Just the right amount of wobble, right amount of bass. I wouldn't mind hearing a version with the bach turned down a tad from about 0.54 onwards. It's nice as a feature, but the dirty bass could really kick here.

After a long hiatus. Drop out with collaborators. A foray into house. An indie dance/pop duo and a lot of other life related crap, I'm finally getting the sounds I want out of my head. Here's my track, now as John.D not ElSonido.

@LukeRaith That vibrato in the melody is really nice touch, and that really bubbly riser fits really well in the track. I'm listening this through headphones atm so mixing wise it might sound a little different, but atm the sub is way too soft and the track feels a bit empty. Also I think the whole track itself becomes a bit boring, as all the melodic elements seem to all be in unison (especially the sub and the high synth). Add some compositional layers or some atmospheres or something, the melody by itself for the intro is fine but for a drop it needs something more, you need it to contrast. Heck, if you want to keep the melody and sub in unison at the drop, try tuning some other percs and chuck him, screwing around with the pitch. Also, try bouncing the melody and chop it up, rearrange etc - glitch it up a bit, get some really funky disjointed rhythms going. You can do a lot with what you've already got there, go wild with it ;)

@fluidmoshun It's more or less the drums which really sound a bit weak here... it's a sick beat but it just doesn't stick out enough for me, particularly that snare... chuck a transient shaper or enveloper on the snare (if you can, might have to cut up the break if it's one file) to give it a bit more punch, boost some of the high frequencies to emphasise its presence in the mix. That said, the kick might have to come up to make it sound balanced, or maybe the whole break.

@SonicArts Push the levels up on that basse mate! It sounds really tight in parts, like really crisp. Other than that, the levels are spot on mate, I actually really enjoyed it.

@bugsky Loving the flow of this track... everything really fits well together. Maybe go a littler easy on the panning? Just a tad, particularly on where it becomes louder. The pitch bendy vocals are reall chill as well. Like someone said, bring the kick out in the mix a bit more, maybe layer a higher frequency kick on top and compress it, or get it to 'slap' just a tad more.

@z6z Liking the beat and the vocals in the intro, the reverb snare before the drop really adds space to the whole track. I don't think the drop really fits though... it doesn't really stay in key. Just a preference thing though. Oh, and the mid-bass peaks on almost the exact same peak of the vocals I think... probably explains the muddiness around there. You can try eq both so they don't clash as much but by the sounds of it it's going to be hard. Also, the saw at 2:30 is comes out a bit too much in the mix, did you use fm8? Maybe dull it down by adding a sine or something and compressing it - the sound fits really well with the track though.

Here's my wip... I think I've got enough parts to extend the song for a bit longer so essentially the composition is finished. Any tips on mixing it better? What to add/improve?

Thanks for the critique guys, it helps alot.
@kidstrange: Yeah I actually did another remix of a classical song, you should check it out - http://soundcloud.com/sonic-arts/concerto-remix.

@oprs: first off thanks for the feedback, EQing the drums has definitely been my greatest challenge so far haha. Your track? Creepy, to say the least. The style? Not really my cup of tea. Really well done though, it morphs and transforms very fluidly, and I gotta say you got some pretty sweet sounds goin on. Honestly this is one of those tracks that you gain more appreciation for every time you listen to it.

@z6z: something's off about the drop. I think maybe your synth is coming in like a tiny bit before everything else. Also, I'm thinkin that while you have your synth going, you should either bring the vocals forward a lil or back a lil in the mix. Right now it feels like the synth and the vocals are competing for the lead, at least while they're going at the same time. You set up a nice groove though, definitely enjoyable to listen to.

@fluidmotion: yeah I didn't actually plan on making it a dubstep song, but it felt like it was asking for it. As far as your WIP goes, haha ah not what I was expecting from these forums. it's a refreshing change though. As for balancing and what not, I left you some soundcloud comments. I think the drums need to be a little louder overall. Not a lot louder, but just enough so i don't have to strain to hear their intricacies. Which brings me to my next thought. There's a shitton going on in this track. Everything's all over the place... but there's a solid consistency to it and I'll be damned if it doesn't sound good. Even so (and this is just me), I feel like there might still be room for some pads or something. Not really sure, but it seems like your upper frequencies are pretty much empty. Oh and I'm really lovin that guitar man. awesome groove, it kind of brings the whole track together. Good stuff.

@ElSonido: In short... I would like to hear more. I kinda wish that the guitar didn't totally drop out after the build, though. The groove in the beginning is chill as fuck, and the bass by itself is kind of empty. The kick build/transition was strangely smooth, however. it builds tensions and releases it pretty much seamlessly. Got any tips on that? haha.

@ Luke Raith - Sounding good. Didn't think i was going to like it, then the bass kicked in and it all came together. It sounds cool. Nice and boppy. Makes me think of a dubby carnival. I think you should continue on as you are introducing fun dubby leads, go for a big weird sound. With some interesting samples and drops you've got a great song.

@ Oprs - Nice creepy vibe to the intro. The song has some really nice sounds. I like the mood you've created. I really like the sounds from 2:35 - about 2:42, the little blips you have in there sound great. For me i would have liked some trancy leads swirling around in the mix. A lead with a strong melody and rythim to carry the song through a bit more. It seems like alot of work went into the percussion blips and backround noises too. They sound good and i think some sould be brought up in the mix.

FluidMoShun - Start sounds fast. Didn't have time to prepare for the intensity of the first part. The part from about 1:08 is great! love the blending. And the cuts are great. Wow this is a strange song. Guitar sounds awesome. Love the vibe now. The track has some great parts but i'm not feeling some of the parts leading up to them. The guitar bit's make this song for me. I think if this song was based around the guitar bit i would love it. Feels a little fast and hard to follow at the moment in the other bits. Has alot of potential though.

@ ElSonido - Love the open feel to the track. It's heavy and beautiful. Great sweeps and love the snare sound. Definately think all the sounds are working together well. I personally might like it more without the wobble. Either way it's sounding like a great track so far.

Here's my WIP. I wanted to focus on making a more psychedelic track.

@MexicanKangaroo: love the pads. love the chord choices. love the bass. honestly, the only thing I don't love is the drums. I like how you fade em out with a filter, but I think they should have more variation. not really a fan of having that highhat pattern go on for the whole song. for most of it sure, but I wouldn't mind hearing a section with a straight hh pattern. you say your done composing though, so I'm sure you're not going to rewrite your drum track on my account, but maybe just something to keep in mind for another song. as far as mixing goes, I think everything's pretty much good. Especially the bass. Just the right amount. i might bring out the kick more, though. i dunno, i personally like a bassier kick. one you can feel more than hear, ya know? so anyway I might bring up the low end a little, and maybe give it a quick compressor to bring out the attack. you seem to know more about EQing than me, though, so I'll leave that one to you. Very quality song overall.

@ Elsonido - Im liking the intro, nice work on the atmosphere build up and the bass is nice. Id only maybe just turn bring the beat out more it sounds like its just sitting in the background atm, simply just turn it up in the levels.

@ MexicanKangeroo - Track is deep man i like it alot, not much to change there! I just think it would sound much more complete with a bigger snare with a bit of reverb.

@ Olux - Very nice atmosphere, really likin the beat, kind of garagey feel. I would only say that the track just gets a bit repetitive, add some break downs and distinctive changes on every 8th and 16th bars.

oprs wrote:JL- listening now, intro's really cool i like that. the snare sounds kinda generic, i like the drop. somethings might be a little to high and its covering a little of the emotion you got going on. im all for some heavy ass bass, but it needs to breathe a litle bit every now and then, but i like the style.
Thanks for the feedback oprs, Ive tried to make some changes based on it, ive turned the levels up on pads etc and introduced some cuts in the bass line,
here it is...

@JLproductions: one word friend: bass. heavy stuff and i like it and it is sounding really polished. there is a place for tunes like this to come back right now, just the barebones of design (not saying that in a bad way). love the snare rolls goin in the beat as well. its got a total groove. the synth sounds really crisp, which i wish it just had a bit of dirt to it, dunno why but just me. would totally mix this though.

@olux: cool design man but feel the need to say this and mean no hate. i was once told a track should be like a story and try to take you on a journey i know i know :corndance: but i feel like it really starts to sound like a build at about 3 minutes. like i am just waiting for something. something big or for it all to go away. but its an anxious feeling to me is what i get, and hey if you are going for that cool too.

@mexicankangaroo: interesting stuff i must say. i like the bass chops and what you do around 1:54 with that one chord. cuts through nice. i think i also have to agree with drum variation and bring out them drums abit. especially that snare. awesome start though!

i havent been too happy with alot that i have been producing in the past few weeks and i just felt in this rutt, until yesterday night. i watched an episode of daria with the girlfriend and then just got to work. and i finished up today. i know the sample needs a bit of work. not planning to add much sub to this, minus in the drum kicks. but i was happy with what came out and since my past few WIPs have gone on defended ears, i hope this brings a bit of critique.

@ctang - Quiet nice, although basic, the piano is nice, not to keen on the synths, but its quiet nice, better than something i would have done in 3 months of producing, add some bass, and mess around with a few different synth sounds remember to add effects also.

@beastmodefordummies - drums sound cool, although not sure on the quality (maybe youtube) yoyoy bass isnt too tasteful imo, i would try and do something different with the bass. lead is very nice! keep this clean, no filthy bass sounds. i think it would be better. imo :)

@traffek Like the Sampled Voices, 1st Bass sound Fits nice although a little all over the place , the others need the work imo. Pads & Little Blippy sound (lol) sound good, Drums are pretty perfect. id like to hear the finished tune.

this one isnt really dubstep but it just made what i felt. its full lenth although may need to do work to the arrangement / mix. just looking for opinions / ideas. :) cheers.

I'm on a crap internet connection so it's proving difficult to listen to anyone elses for feedback - but I'll catch up tomorrow - always good to listen to other peoples efforts :)

Anyway, here's something I've been working on, not sure how it ended up being breaks, it originally started off as drumstep and then I changed the tempo and now it's breaks! I like it though, not sure whether there's too much changing up etc...

Anyway, any comments greatfully received :) especially as it probably wont get listened to by anyone apart from the people who review it here :P

Ok so my internet connection's fixed up so here goes with some feedback:

@LukeRaith - Not bad, but it lacks any real kick in the bass, probably worth checking your setup and processing bass to include some mid range, it sounds a bit hollow in the middle. The drums are also missing any "snap", could probably do with being compressed and processed somewhat, good effort though, I like the arpy type noise, and a bit of balance in sounds and pushing for more punch and depth would make it bigger :)

@traffek - intro: Nice, I like that opening sound, and the arpy noise that comes in. The beat sounds nice, although the snare could do with some more layers in my opinion, sounds quite close to the 909 snare for my liking. Bassline sounds sick, although the clap's lows are overpowering a bit, like they need to be pushed further back in the mix somehow?

@ctang - first off - NEVER use the FlKeys as standard, sorry but it just instantly gave the game up, i know you're a beginner and it might sound harsh, but make your own sounds, it will sound a lot more professional in an instant! Musically, you're skilled, this tune sounds nice with some excellent harmonies, lacking a bassline so that's the next thing for you to look into, but basically it's just a case of getting your technical skills in check (if you've only been producing since feb this shows you've come a long way already), this has potential!

@JLProductions - Nice intro, one thing missing seems a bit of depth in the mix though in my opinion, like it when it drops though, you could see this pumping a dancefloor, that's a warm bass you got going on - the drums feel like that they could do with a bit of punch though, like the intermittent snare, not sure how you'd achieve it though. Sounds nice though :)

@olux - well. It is pretty psychedelic, but i'd prefer it more deeeper. But yeah, relaxed me quite good. Well done, Sir.
@Sonic Arts - woah. Classical music mixed with some hip-hop'ish groove, took ( or won ? [damn english. I'm confused.]) my heart ! (didn't like the wobbles, though. :( )
@JLProductions - nice work with the drums. Enjoyed it.
@ctang - Drum and bass IS fun. Needs some pad imo. Nice relaxing melody, now add a nice drop and get it going.
@traffek - That's pretty much into my music taste. Maybe the bass-synth sounds a bit akward, but i'm not sure atm lol.
@a5hl3y2k6 - the track is currently not available. :(
@yoitsfrankd - WOAH. "Bass Spoon". WTF LOL. + 1 follower for you because the whole THING ;)
@adover - i'm huge fan of drumbreaks, so two thumbs up ! Really enjoyable track.
