a question about ableton live & sending sends through sends

Post by sefs » Thu May 19, 2011 10:08 pm

Hello everyone,

I've started setting up my start out template for ableton live (i switched from cubase 5 to ableton live since i found out how easy it is to assign whatever parameters to your midi controllers :)), now i have encountered the following problem. What i want to do is have 4 send channels ready to use. Two of them will have glitch plugins like artillery and izotope's stutter edit loaded on em (also a huge IDM fan here :)). Now what i want Ableton Live to do is send audio from let's say audio track 1 to return track 1 (which has the first set of glitch plugins loaded on it) and then send it to return track 2 (which has the second set of glitch plugins loaded on it.. but it could also be anything really.. distortion.. bitcrushers whatever).

The problem is though: return track 1 won't forward the audio from the audio track (of which the output has been set to sends only) to the other return track.. I've tried everything, from setting return track 1's output also to sends only and return track 2 to master for instance.. But it won't work the way i want it to..

Is there perhaps anyone here who knows how i can get this done? I can't imagine that this isn't possible! I already had this idea in mind before i started setting up this template and i'm kinda amazed that it isn't working out as fluently as i was hoping it to be..

Anyway, it would be nice if anyone could help me out :).

Thanks for reading!

I'm not quite sure I understand. Do you want to sum the 2 return tracks? Or simply have return A > return B but still retain some dry Return A signal?

i guess i'm a tad confused about what you want to do.. the return tracks to the right in ableton are generally for sending different instruments to the same effect chain.

what i would try is have two audio tracks, 1 and 2, for example. have your sample on track 1, and set track 2 to "in" and on the drop down menu select input audio from track 1. put whatever effects you want on track 2. then you could control your return tracks via audio track 2.

also, you can try playing with the crossfader... have one audio track send to crossfade A, and another track to B. so when you crossfade it will smoothly transition from the different effect chains.

what i want is this:

i have a melody or drums or whatever (either midi or in audio) on a track and i want it through > return a (to do whatever glitching i want with it), and then have this output go through > return b (and do whatever i want with it again..) and have all of this go to > master.

so what i did it was.. have return a send it's output solely to return b.. and have return b send it's output to the master channel.. this way it SHOULD work.. but it isn't! :(

if that's all you want to do, just do what i said.

don't use the return tracks to chain audio together. use groups of audio send tracks and chain them together using the routing options. if you want the dry and wet signal present: track 1 sends to master, track 2 set to "in" and to audio in from track 1, audio out to master.

if you only want the wet signal, set track 1 to audio out to track 2, have track 2 set to "in" and have it audio out to the master.

another suggestion, you gotta right click on your send knobs to turn them on in the returns and you can send.

i find the sends in ableton, atleast my current version, to be really strange. I will get harsh latency with drums now and then. i do a lot of grouping with effects racks and use chains (thats a good way to get wet and dry too IMO)

bassline does what i do too though which seems to work the best with me in ableton.
