Help with logic autofilter/ au filter reccomendations

Post by Manic Harmonic » Fri May 20, 2011 8:16 pm

Hi everyone, I'm having trouble with the autofilter in logic. I usually use the filter in massive, but i've layered a bunch of plugins on top of the sound (ohmicide, bitcrusher, etc) and the filter in the synth doesnt come through very well. so im playing around with the auto filter in logic... it gives it the sound im going for, the problem is that i cant change the start point of the lfo like i can in massive, in always starts in the middle of the wave, which is giving all my notes a "ewaahh" sound rather than just a "wah"... i cant find any setting in auto filter to change that. any suggestions on how to fix this or reccomendations for au filters? the simpler the better... i dont need a bunch of knobs to confuse me... i downloaded psp nitro to try it out but it's way more than i need and takes to long to set it up. also attempted to try out the camelphat but it wouldnt show up in logic and ive heard its rather harsh...

Doesn't the phase control on autofilter allow you to change where in the cycle the LFO starts?

wrigzilla, ill give that a try. i did play around with that and i swear it didnt do anything... ill try it again. could be a latency issue, ive got like 30 plus tracks in this song... and amidoinitrie - excuse my ignorance but you lost me. care to elaborate?

edit: ok wrigzilla you were right. cant believe i couldnt figure that out! id still like to hear some other reccomendations to play around with. i got ohmforce quadfrohmage but it wouldnt validate. volcano is cool but it only does 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16, no thirds.

also, just so i dont have to start another thread, does anyone know of a good way to get the "dimension expander" sound from massive? i know its based off the roland dimension-d, but i dont know how the dimension-d works, except that its a unique, clean sounding chorus.

no way to fix it man, other than bouncing down the audio.

automate it manually instead of using LFO's. Im no logic user, so this is the only answer I can give you
...in my opinion

+1. The autofilter can be useful for some purposes. I'd love to have an AU/VST filter with LFO's that behave similarly to the modulations in Massive. Anyone on here have a goto AU Filter with a sin wave LFO (there are no sin waves on any LFO's inside Logic) they'd recommend?

Fabfilter Volcano for stuff like this. Way better than Logic's native Autofilter

I'm assuming you're pretty familiar with volcano then. I have it, and I love the sound of it. The problem is the lfo only does 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc, no thirds. Surely there must be a way to do this that isnt immediately apparent, do you know how to do that?

i was about to push for volcano altho ive experienced clipping with it...

i used to be obsessed about third party filters and then i understood that u just need to push ur tools further ...

best is prolly to write the automation for each parameter in logics automation view... deepest results.

I think tone 2 bi-filter has got a LOT of options - very good filter plug.

demo it here; http://www.tone2.com/html/___bifilter.html

by memory,

a lot of these tools dont have

- phase settings
- reset function

the massive one is my favourite up so far.

Thanks tpc_uk, the bifilter doesn't look like it has an lfo, but the filter bank looks promising, I will definately check that out. The reason the lfo is important for me rather than doing it manually is to be able to twist a knob or 2 in real time and get some more human feeling effects.

Alright I guess im giving up on audio units here. Massive really has the best one for me. Every one I seem to try is missing one thing or another. Im going to explore some vst's and see if I can use them in maschine as an effects plugin, and possibly reaktor ensembles. Hell, even a synth with a sidechain input would work. Im being waaaaay too picky here but I really want the sound that's in my head.

if i were u id try to write in automation ...

there is no rational way u couldn't write exactly what u want without writing the actual automation.

Sure, if you select a tempo sync'ed value in the XLFO section eg 1/8 - the Frequency knob in the XLFO section changes to an Offset control. Click the dots around the offset knob for triplet and dotted offset values ;)

Ok now im trying to figure out how to get the lfo to reset with each note. Massive does this, I can't get volcano, autofilter, or any other plugins to do it. Logic has a retrigger function that seems like it would do this but it makes no difference, volcano I can't find anything of the sort.

Edit: I figured out how to do it with autofilter. My synth was peaking at 0db before the filter, wih other plugins placed after it turning it down, so logic wasn't detecting the threshold correctly. Still couldn't figure it out in volcano. Now the phase knob in logic doesn't do anything. I am extremely confused.

Make the LFO "free" (aka, not in sync), make sure it retriggers on each midi note, then find the right rhythm. This will also give it a more organic quality.

i guess the filter im looking for doesn't exist... i think im going to just use autofilter and move the notes back until the lfo starts when i want and use a vca comp with a click track sidechain to cut off the beginning of the notes.
