initially: Midnight Request Line (that actually made me go out and buy my own sub)
but this tune (and Stagger) made me get searching into it more:

I was still listening to grime more at this point but these were the 2 tunes which made the balance shift for me:
from the end of the fabriclive37 mix of course
<iframe src="/forum/video.php?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLM194VQIv8" frameborder="0" style="overflow:hidden; height:auto; max-width:540px"></iframe>

and I didn't even know who had produced this 1 at the time, I just happened to randomly download a show from Rinse where Heny G was on there in 07:

This tune right here. Proper dark, haunting ambience. It was the first time hearing such weird bass sounds and drums.

i think some comment on youtube mentioned this song so I searched it

I had never heard anything like it and was like :o :D
not long after i would be listening to rusko, benga, bar 9 etc

round 2 came when I happened upon this video searching for 'dubstep dance'

first time ever hearing anything hardcore/bro-ey other than bar 9
naturally I was like 'who are these guys datsik and excision'?

edit: i still think thats the perfect video for Gizmo BTW

I come from a mainly hip-hop listening back ground (always loved drum n bass and initially grime (got a bit bored of it though)), so I'm really an album person. Some mentioned vex'd "degenerate" and burial "burial", so I picked them up back in 06 or early 07. I absolutely loved vex'd, reminded me of technical itch and some other techstep, but I didn't really 'get' burial for a while, until one night I went home after a drug fuelled night, and coming down at 4am I stuck on burial again and got completely lost in the music, it was one of the most surreal listening experiences I've ever had.

After that I went and got Skream! Fabriclive 37, the dubstep all-stars, and from their I was hooked.

I'm still more of an album person, so I don't keep to up to date as to what singles are out, I prefer sitting down, lighting up, and getting absorbed in the music for an hour.

Used to listen to El-B tracks back in the day when I was like 10 haha, my mates older brother used to play them, and used to love garage in general, then kind of zoned out for a few years, wasn't really aware of dubstep, although I'd heard of people like Burial and Skream, and had Burial - Burial, then people started talking about dubstep, and showing me bods like Chase & Status, Rusko, Nero, etc. wasn't really feeling it, so kind of stayed away from it.

Then one of my friends at worked gave me his hard-drive to look through, started picking a few tracks that I liked, then I was just researching and researching, checking the classics, a few new bods, and when I hit Digital Mystikz, it just snowballed.

I'd heard a couple of tracks before this one, but this is the one that I remember being really into.
Used to blast this in my car and my head would bob to the point where driving was borderline dangerous

first was Vibesquad and justice, Not dubstep but this got me into electro music.
Then came Bassnectar, saw him at a couple shows. Lorin throws down at the clubs, no doubt.
Widdler, Excision, Skream, came after. Basically just becoming familiar with what dubstep even is now.
Now I listen to all i can find =]

Heard Midnight Request Line when it came out and liked it, even bought the Zinc remix and battered it. But I was too busy listening to and mixing dnb at the time so never gave it enough attention. Anyway role on a few years and I went to Paradise Factory for a mates 21st, Digital Mystikz were on the line up but I think it was just Mala in the end that played anyway that was probably the best and probably still is the best set I've ever heard. Loved every track from start to finish and a few week later found myself blowing my money on Dubstep records rather than dnb records
