smooth/hollow bass
been trying to make a very smooth, hollowish sounding bass, but i cant quite get it smooth as water like im trying to do...
been using sqaures as they seem to give that hollow tone, sines, triangles, etc
im not asking for a step by step here, just some tips and ideas on how to create a smooth sub, with minimal to no gritty texture..i use z3ta and it seems even the sine have a slightly rough texture to them down low.
any adivce? thanks

Re: smooth/hollow bass
ah goth trad, great production.
Definitely a little bit of resonance on that, maybe a triangle waveform...

Re: smooth/hollow bass
cant see the vid cos im in work so no idea what the sounds like. for more hollow sounds i tend to put a little reverb on it and a very fast delay, both with a low cut on them

Re: smooth/hollow bass
I would do it in two sections, I use reason so id use thor but im sure you could do it with anything: Osc 1 for a deep low end, so a sine wave, lo pass filter cut it really low around 140 or below(ish), add a small amount of distortion, id use the built in wave shaper set to hard clip with a tiny amount, this will give you a warm deep slightly fuzzy bass. or you could route it to a separate distortion unit like the foldback dist or scream 4 set to tube (this will give it some compression as well) They key to this bit is subtle subtle. Then select osc 2 as a wavetable the (5 sines setting should do it) basically anything with lots of harmonics, route that to a separate lo pass filter, open reasonably wide, then modulate the filter cut-off and the wave table position from an lfo. Then finally adjust the resonance on the lo pass filter until you get the poppy effect. thinking about it I would also modulate the gain of osc 1 with the same lfo, keeping the amount around the 50% area.
hope this helps.
