When someone asks you "What music you into?"..

Post by Stuuka » Sat May 28, 2011 8:58 pm

How do you reply?

I always consider this an awkward question,

Does anyone actually say that they are into dubstep?
What do you call it?

Are you like me where you reply with something like "uhh weighty music, a bit of garage 2step etc" feeling somewhat embarrassed by the name dubstep nowadays?

Good question.

When people asked me this question 5 years ago I just simply replied with "Dubstep", then they would reply with "what? What the fuck is that?" and I would play them some of the sickest tune ever made and they would go mental.

Nowadays, when people ask me this question, I reply with "Reggae", since that's the genre I listen to the most besides Dubstep. Because now, if I would reply with "Dubstep", I would instantly get associated with those hipsters that only listen to Skrillex and Doctor P.

Fucking sad, I know.

I say that it hasn't got a name but I'll be glad to play some for you.

never dubstep... never. as vishes said its sad but the usual associations made just arent worth the explanation how your not into robots. usually just go with EDM and if they ask you to be more specific jump straight into DJs/Producers... and if they dont recognize any of the names then straight into a shoulder shrug and moving on in the conversation ahah

'Dubstep, and not the shit kind' seems to work well.

i never roll with 'dubstep' anymore the same reasons as above, most people say 'oh all that 'wub wub wub' crap?!"

normally just say " bass-driven underground stuff, you probably wont get it'

Only works for me because it either silences them or they know what I think is shit, one day it won't work.

I tell them I like Robo-bass because I don't want them to get the wrong idea and think I like all that Reggae/Garagey stuff.

I say bass music. It implies dubstep, drum & bass, some house, some techno, etc. If I say dubstep I almost always get the reponse "Oh neat I love Skrillex too, do you like deadmau5? He makes dubstep, too" and I just don't want to bother explaining myself.

this thread is win hahaha. I absolutely hate when people ask me this question because since I live in a rural area in North/South Carolina now cause NO ONE down here knows what any real electronic music is. I usually just dumb it down to any electronic music, cause if I would say dubstep, edm, house, or anything no one would really know what I'm talking about. now if I was still in Pittsburgh, it would be the absolute opposite. all they know is the wub wub. I'm starting to dig into the roots of classic dubstep now though and there is nothing like it. it's pure sex.
