is there an easy way to get the key of an acapella?

Post by VirtualMark » Tue May 31, 2011 12:12 am

hey, i was wondering what everyone does when using vocals. i'm not from a musical background and the music side of things is what i struggle with most. so when adding vocals i have no idea what notes they're in. any advice on this?

play some notes on a piano until it sounds like it's in key ;) this only comes with practise and training your ear.

an eisier way would be with a program that can detect the tune of it. melodyne works well

You can do this easily in fl studio. You have to load the vocals in edison, then find the dump score to piano. It will then try to put the vocals into single notes on the piano roll. You can then open up the notes, and see what scale the vocals are in, everything after that is easy :)

If you can't work out what key an acapella is in.... You prob should work on some 'real' music as practice first, otherwise you'll probably end up making atonal crap. IMO... Once you've trained your ear a little, figuring out the key using a piano will take you a matter of seconds.

I'm not sure if it determines the exact key of the vocal as some vocals are in 1 or 2 different keys but... Get a string preset up, play in a higher register like 3rd or 4th octave up your keyboard, and find the note that you can play all the way through the vocal, or the original track, without going 'out of key'. Whatever note that is I guess would be the key of the vocal.

I have a program called 'mixedinkey' you basically add a folder or file to it and it tells you the key for all of them and also allows you to change the key

hey thanks for the replies. i've used some of the software mentioned but i was never too sure how accurate they were. sounds like i'm kinda on the right track from the suggestions here, hopefully my ear will develop and i'll be able to tell easier.

Just use your ears! If your note sounds the same as the vocal, then it is. It really is that simple... is it not??

everyone's given good advice above ie play notes on your piano or searching google, but to be honest if it's a bit of a task to find the key by yourself, you probably shouldn't be doing any remixes until your ears are more trained. if in fact you are doing a remix or anything like that.

actually i find remixing way easier than producing my own tracks. its just when i use vocals on their own its sometimes hard to fit them in so they sound good. practice practice lol

it tells you all the notes thats being hit but you can work out whats the key of that i think or i may be wrong in saying this, isnt the key the root note of whats being picked up the most, in the acapella i used mainly G carried on coming up prominently between all the other notes

i hope this makes sense i need to stop replying when ive been drinking and smoking as nothing that i write seems to make sense to me

Does key make any difference?
I mean, if you're uninspired, knowing what key it's in wouldn't really fix that would it?
Do you say zerbaman? Or do you say zebraman?

Yeah that how music works :6:

P.S. If you can't remix like these guys, don't fucking bother...

P.P.S. Use your ears.
