What keeps you motivated?

Post by antman » Tue May 31, 2011 5:05 am

Sup guys, I'm just wondering what keeps you... Motivated

For me... Right now im not sure. I love the music and I love to learn more and more everyday but at the end of the day for some reason sometimes I say to myself... I'll never be as good as (insert Artist name here) and no one is even listening to what I'm making... Whats the point!

Other days I find that I get excited when I learn something new and I go crazy thinking "wow huge step forward!!" ... And yet I still don't know what my motivation is.

So what motivates YOU to keep making music?

So what motivates YOU to keep making MUSIC?
The answer lies therein :D, Seriously!

Quick edit, I've been a musician for a good majority of my life self taught alot of things, so being able to express myself regardless of whether others are listening is my motivation.
LOL I am just starting to use FL for dubstep and this is the only vid that showed me how to open Sytrus! Thanks, at least you helped me out. :)

Yeah man that must be awesome to just be able to express yourself. I'm not really good enough at producing and making sounds just the way I want them to sound to be able to express how I'm feeling through the music. Hopefully in time I'll become better and that will be motivation as well. Who knows!

one thing is the artists that inspire me, more specifically hearing something they've done that makes me want to make something, can't really put it into words cause it's more of a feeling.

another thing is experiences, events, happenings, phenomena, etc...

I actually had a thought about this type of question last night so i'll write out some of what it was

To create, you need inspiration. If you keep creating without replenishing your inspiration, the more you will feel like you're scraping the bottom of the barrel. Likewise if your inspiration manages to reach a breaking point without a proper outlet, either you will lose some of that inspiration, some of your energy, or it could possibly lead to destructive behavior.

A big influence for me was getting to meet Reso. i have tons an tons of musical influences but meeting the person who got me interested in dubstep entirely and most inspired by sound/music-wise was a massive influence on my music and how i want increase my skills

if you have that mentality how do you expect to ever get better? the big name artists have been doing this for years, but if you're constantly telling yourself you can't accomplish something then you won't. i used to think "man whats the point its not like im going to become famous or anything" but then i realized how do i know? because if i dont try then i certainly won't, but if i keep at it at least something more positive will come out of it than if i were to just drop it all together. see what i mean?

That feeling that I get when I make something that sounds awesome is my biggest motivation.

Another big motivation for me is listening to other people's music, because I know with enough hard work and determination I can make music as good as they can.

My newest motivation has been this competition game I play with myself.
I'm always expressing myself musically with production, but the main thing for me is improvement.
If my newest tune is better than the one before it, then I'm motivated to go above and beyond that one as well.
Now obviously this comes with letdowns, but it also encourages progression. I'm always trying something new, or learning something so I can listen to my new stuff and look back and realize how far I've come. It's actually really inspiring. :D

It's fun and it's something I want to do for the rest of my life, I love my capturing ideas and art on the some form of long-lasting media. It captures a moment in my life and often when I listen to old tunes I think back to when I made it, and what was going on my life and what I was like then. I'm pretty confident that as I get older and more experienced I will be able to get somewhere with it, I hope to put out a lot of tapes and records while on earth. I have been building up a collection of funky gear that I am guilty of neglecting but will get to work on using soon especially since I got my audio interface up and running a couple days ago!

Anyways I'm excited for my future with music, and I really hope I start spending more time with my gear and tunes soon. I'm pretty lazy and just need to get in the habit of getting off my ass and getting into it more than I have been.

Oh yeah tunes/artists that I consider genius. One that always sticks out for me is lapti's earlier work called specific components, I've only heard the mix he made for monday jazz that features songs from it, I have yet to get the songs individually. Reallly great stuff.

For me the motivation is still in the learning aspects, but the biggest is listening to tracks I made when I started 6 months ago and listening to what I just made and hearing how much I've improved. Its very much a personal competition. There are moments where I'll think I'm just spinning my tires with all this music stuff, but then I open my DAW and things just start flowing for me.

aNother way I help to get motivated is listening to the big name producers and knowing at one point they were like "...the fuck Ian LFO"

Its always great when i get to bump a track that I made MYSELF, to know that its something i made, its always a good feeling, and i have this dream of dj'ing to a big crowd and skanking on stage, who knows if that will ever happen, but i dont want to give up on production cause maybe i could do that one day, its just a matter of sticking with and furhter progressing my production skills, worry about that first, get your shit sounding top notch, then worry about publicity. theres no point in spamming SC links of a shit track, that will only make people not want to listen to your next track, so basically... the art itself of production and what it could turn into if you stick with it long enough is what keeps me going most of the time

when I finish a track and see all the comments on Youtube / Soundcloud etc. makes me feel really good and also meeting new people through music which wouldnt happen if I wasnt motivated... so the 'end product' is what motivates me to keep going as even though its hard working on a track and frustrating I know if i put the effort in I can rack up a large amount of views like my previous release which have got around 50k views each due to me being more motivated.

Trying to keep my own unique style in this messy world of brostep soundalikes.
Hearing my own progression keeps me motivated greatly.
I'm not really motivated by feedback from others, but it is nice!
I like doing my own thing and having my own style, so I have to motivate myself.

Talking to producers on Facebook, namely Skrillex, Culprate and Liquid Stranger. Big lads keep me inspired.

Nobody listens to my stuff as well. I find my motivation is hearing my song, it makes me sorta proud.
