what frequency is a good range to boost bass when eq'ing?

Just depends on your bass. On your EQ, boost the mids and just sweep it up and down until you find a spot that sounds good. From there just do small adjustments to that spot until you're comfortable with what you have.

Additive boosting frequencies eats up way too much head room. I find it much better to remove the frequencies you don't need and then raise the channel volume on the fader. I like 400hz and 5khz for presence but think your much better playing the bass in the whole mix and sweeping the eq to find the sweet spot of where you get the most presence in that specific mix.
