Do Old People Like Dubstep?

Post by deluxe » Thu Jun 02, 2011 7:32 pm

Have you ever had someone 40+ listen to dubstep? Ever introduce your grandpa to Mala or Burial?

I haven't myself...but just curious to know if a genre so young and fresh would appeal to someone of age. Would they appreciate the low end frequencies, melodies, atmosphere, and wonderful percussion of some proper tunes?

My dad (almost 40) likes a bit of Loefah and Distance, dont think ive shown him much else though, My mum says she cant stand it, although shes bullshitting a bit, I can tell, some of the more percussive, melodic tracks I play dont involve a big shout 'TURN IT DOWN!' shes vibin to it, Closet dubbstepper

My parents won't like it all. In fact the only thing in my music collection that my family ever appreciates is Massive Attack.

However I do have a friend in her mid 40's that LOVES Kingdom, Girl Unit, assorted juke music, etc. She also started loving dubstep and bmore club before it got pretty popular.

My dad does all the mastering for my label, and he's 55. He loves almost all the music I send him, from minimal rollers to downright abusive stuff. To be fair though, he's been in a metal band and an engineer longer than most of you have been alive.

I also just sent some of my stuff to a sales rep that deals with the company I work for. She loved it and gave it to everyone in her office....It's pretty melodic, so I think it's appealing to a wide range of music lovers.

ETA: My pops will actually go to shows because he loves the bass on a big system so much ;)

A while back my dad asked me to burn him a cd with Burial, Guido, Synkro, Phaeleh, Scuba, Mount Kimbie, basically all nice 'chilled' tunes I had, so that he could listen to the tunes in the car.

I know a woman, who has to be pushing 80 at this point, who has been to every rave at this one club that I've been to since I was 15. She was there for Hip/hop, Jungle, Minimal, Techno, Electro and now Dubstep, although I only hit the scene from Minimal onwards.

I know my parents can't deal with heavy bass at all. I wonder if I'll hate the music the next generation will listen to...

i think the older people really like the chilled dubstep tunes
It's about dropping a track at the wrong speed, and it sounding better than the real thing.

My 45 year old mum asked me what I was listening to when I was playing Burial - Southern Comfort and she actually liked it.

My friend's dad likes Skrillex.
Skrillex is the only modern musician who's music he enjoys.
Do you say zerbaman? Or do you say zebraman?
