I need sleep.

Post by LA_Boxers » Thu Jun 09, 2011 1:21 pm

So i've had over a week of late nights now, including some drunkern ones too, im properly feeling tired like all the time now. Was saying to somebody how I was going to be really early tonight to catch up on sleep but they said theres no such thing as catching up with sleep and you just need a good 8 hours of uniterupted sleep to be ok again? I didnt believe this but does anybody know for sure??

Apparently it's true. I saw this thing about a tennis man who played tennis for about 3 days non-stop (he had tiny breaks); the guy was followed closely by doctors all the time and after that. They said he "catched up" on all his sleep in one night...

I think placebo (not sure if thats the correct term) effect has allot to do with this type of stuff. I mean I have always believed that you need around 7 hours sleep to not feel really tired the next day. So now if I only have 5 or 6 hours an night for a few days in a row i find myself falling asleep early and catching up on the hours I've missed. Now I'm not sure if this is my brain thinking I'm tired so makes me feel sleepy ( because I'm aware of the hours I've missed out) or because I'm genuinely tired because of the missed hours....

I realise this is of no help so sorry about that haha.

Body clock. Everyone has a routine of some sort, waking before your just before your alarm and all that. Don't got to bed earlier it will throw your body clock a bit off and lead to more sleep problems.

I have a shitty sleep pattern as it is. If you have a routine bedtime, stick to it. Trust me. I've left mine get all out of shape :(

I know what you mean......but yes this doesnt really help! Nah only messing. I defo agree with what youre saying. I like routine so I guess most of it is actually mental rather than physical.

Your avatar always makes me think what your saying is somewhat evil!!lol. Nah I havent really had a routine, im all over the place. Went to bed at midnight yesterday and the day before though (up at 7am) but Tuesday night I woke up quite a bit, where-as last night I pretty much slept straight through.

My bedtime is creeping later and my uptime is creeping earlier... last night I couldn't get to sleep before 1am, but my body woke me up at 5.30... 2 hours ahead of my alarm.

What the fucking fuck, body?! I'm KNACKERED.

i didnt sleep last nigt at all.since i finished uni i've progressively been going to bed later and waking up later. proper 6am to bed and up at 3pm. so i decided to just stay up till tonight and then sleep like a log tonight. fingers crossed it puts me back to normal!

also, i worked with a medical student a few years ago that said you should get blocks of 4 hours. 4, 8 or even 12 hours. anything else will probably make you feel weird.

You can train your body into any sort of sleep pattern, my friend did this thing for about a year where he would have a 20 minute nap every 4 hours - and that would be that. he said he functioned sweet on it, and a bunch of famous ppl through history did the same (however for the life of me I cant remember who and im too lazy to google).
Also in one of my psych textbooks the author talks about how he windled himself down to about 4 hours sleep a night and functioned fine, its all just about getting used to it.

Hence why a month ago I'd get cranky when I didn't get a solid 10 hours of sleep in a day, yet at the moment im functioning fine on about 7 hours.

while its true that a good 8 hours of sleep will make you feel refreshed, bad sleeping habits (not sleeping enough 1 day) can have some harmful effects (especially neurologically)

You need to have a certain number of REM sleep, and you can only have so much of it in one night, and if you have less sleep per night you are lessening your chances. A lack of REM sleep will make will usually make a individual seem to be "not themselves".
SYMPTOMS: A person lacking REM sleep will show all the general symptoms of sleep deprivation, such as reduced productivity in the workplace, daytime sleepiness, and not handling stress well. Losing REM sleep makes people more sensitive to pain, too. In addition, REM sleep seems to be necessary for verbal skills. A lack of it will cause a person to not be as creative in using language, and they will not do too well on language tests. Normally a person will be somewhat paralyzed during REM sleep. In cases of RBD, the paralysis is not there. These patients act out their dreams, sometimes leaping out of bed or punching their sleeping partner.
