Something I experience with compressors

I'm confused about it, LOUD ASS POPS, sometimes it only happens the first time I press play, other times it seems kinda at random like mid loop itll happen. (This is right when the audio starts to play)

Messing with attack seems to change it, I have a feeling I'm just being stupid? Happens every once in a while when compressing or sidechain compressing, it's annoying and only happens with threshold is way down.

the pop is the audio pushing through at uncompressed levels before the compressor kicks in.
the stronger the compression the bigger the pop. opening up the attack will turn then pop to more of a punch. with some compressors by turning the attack to zero eliminates the pop but others will make it stronger.
other things to try is if its a synth or sampler pull the amp attack up just allittle so the compressor starts to kick in before the channel hits its full volume.
also is of the compressor alittle if nothing else works. if your getting a pop your running your ratio high and your threshold low.

If I read you right, you are basically hearing artifacts from clipping. With no attack and a very deep threshold your compressor will dramatically lower the volume of a sound immediately. This leaves a step change in the amplitude, aka a square wave. Thus the audible pop.

Adjust the attack so you don't get those pops. Happens in Massive sometimes too, that's why the default volume envelope's attack is set to like 5 ms, not 0 ms.

You could prevent it by having your compressor followed by a limiter... set the limiter up to brickwall, and so it doesnt effect the bulk of the sound, just prevents the pop.

its probably the pissed off neighbour trying to get back at you for keeping him up last night so when ever you play a tune he plays crackling sounds through the 36000 watt sub he just bought yeah thats right this sub plays crackling noises

yes the pop wont be higher db the the bulk but the brickwall will still leave some of not so smooth sound at front of the attack which wont sound so great if its your sub

A good limiter will still let you hear the 'pop', though it won't allow something to exceed the threshold in terms of peak level. That is, in practice you'll probably still hear it, though it won't give a spike on your meters.

This can be used to one's advantage - say, when trying to make drums loud and fat, but still keeping (at the least impression of) punch/smack.

(sorry to bring that up mate, but didnt u loose a pair of monitors due to lack of a limiter?? i think u have a whole lot to teach about "production/monitoring hygiene".. ever thought about a tut ) ?
