tipping bartenders
I dont know what its like in the uk, but in australia its not as customary. In the US however it's pretty much faux paus not to. I was out the other night and bartender guy gave me this line "what you never been to a bar before? we'll see if I serve you again"
i can buy a 40oz at 7-11 for under 5bucks, but at a bar I get a pint for that much. It's extortion.

Re: tipping bartenders
some waiters/waitresses get paid below minimum wage and rely on tips (US), so it's kind of dickish to not tip, personally i do 15% unless it's awesome service, then i bump it up. shitty service? lower than 15%, depends on how bad
bartenders? normally im hopped up so i'll be quite generous.

No one told me this, first time I came over to the States to spin, and I spent the evening wondering why the bar staff were taking longer and longer to serve me

Re: tipping bartenders
well, the bartender can still make minimum wage regardless of your tip (by law), they just rely on your tip to achieve more than the lowest amount... so tips are normally the deciding factor in service

Was a dollar a drink when I was doing such things, probably like a 5'er a drink now.

						Re: tipping bartenders
Don't drink in a bar if you can't afford to tip. In the states you get paid less than minimum wage depending... Here in AZ we get 4.50 per hour, that's less than minimum wage. I'm a bartender. If you don't tip I will remember your ass and give you the service you deserve based on your tip.
Buying beer in the store is different because it's priced at retail.. There is a surcharge in bars in the states, universally. However most places have happy hours, and you can get away with some really great deals. I work at a craft beer bar.. We have some of the rarest beers in the world on 24 rotating taps. A lot are pricey but you cannot have them anywhere else because lots of them are not bottled. It depends what you are looking for when you go out.

I dont typically drink in bars or clubs anymore for that reason and that public transport here is so awful your left with no option but to drive, so you can't really get smashed. DUI' or DWI's are extremely costly and with california in budget crisis mode it's a bit of a doozy. Starting to see more and more random checkpoints late at night.
I work as a barista, shit takes effort, iam not just cracking open a can of pbr. however tips are few and far between.
but damn 4.50 an hour? thats insanse. fucking arizona man.

Re: tipping bartenders
Yessir fuck az in the ass. Has the worst DUI laws in the country too. Zero tolerance state. And the repercussions of a DUI to the slightest degree (lowest DUI charge) is 10 days in jail, about 3000 dollars in fees, a year with a breathalizer interlock device.. alcohol counseling.. the list is long friend. Police state to the max.mezi wrote:I dont typically drink in bars or clubs anymore for that reason and that public transport here is so awful your left with no option but to drive, so you can't really get smashed. btw, is it true you can buy assault rifles on craigslist? and any kind of drug offense in mandatory prison time? I know they make them wear pink jumpsuits and all.

						Re: tipping bartenders
Just to clarify, 4.50 + tips! That's why tips are important here. But, the rest of the world opperates different. Bartenders and servers elsewhere get paid hourly.

Re: tipping bartenders
You can practically buy guns here in vending machines. Not sure the craigslist thing is accurate, I bought all mine at gunshows or gun shops. Any drug offense, not sure, like a gram of weed you might get misdemeanors, I havent ever been busted for drugs. But, it's definitely oppressive for what you have or what you are charged with comparitively with the punishment. And yes, arpaio humiliates his inmates with pink underwear, pink sandals, pink handcuffs, spoiled food, and he was the first fuckhead to bring chaingangs back since the early 20th century.mezi wrote:btw, is it true you can buy assault rifles on craigslist? and any kind of drug offense in mandatory prison time? Re: tipping bartenders
I used to work in a bar in Croydon, shit wage and hardly anybody tipped. I dont understand why bars in America dont just put the extra on the price of the drink and pay the bartenders more? If I was told that a drink cost $5 i'd expect to pay $5, then if the service was good or they did something above and beyond their job, then I'd pay a tip. I dont think you should have to tip if you dont want to. If people are getting to be stnuc about not getting tipped then either make it a law that you have to tip or include it in the price of the drink! sorted. I do my job everyday, I give good service......i dont ask for a tip or get pissed off if I dont get one.

Leaving some currency on a restaurant table is a common way of giving a tip to the serving staff. A tip (also called a gratuity) is a voluntary extra payment made to certain service sector workers in addition to the advertised price of the transaction. Such payments and their size are a matter of social custom. Tipping varies among cultures and by service industry. Though by definition a tip is never legally required, and its amount is at the discretion of the patron being served, in some circumstances failing to give an adequate tip when one is expected is a serious faux pas, and may be considered very miserly, a violation of etiquette, or unethical. In some other cultures or situations, giving a tip is not expected and offering one would be considered at best odd and at worst condescending or demeaning. In some circumstances, such as with U.S. government workers, receiving of tips is illegal.
