Man what the fuck.... i'm sure i've never heard of bar staff in Australia getting less than 15, would have to be closer to 20 if not more.. More than your tips suffice for but why work there in first place? Do other similarly qualified jobs pay better?esfandyar wrote:Here in AZ we get 4.50 per hour

Re: tipping bartenders
Also can't really think of times i've needed to tip... usually give a taxi driver whats owed rounded up to the closest 5 say. Tipping a female bartender would usually equate to 'i would like to f*** you' for most assholes at bars here.
Re: tipping bartenders
Get a service job in the states and then make an opinion. If you are satisfied with no tip, then let me know where you work and I will go in there and never tip you. And you will be happy yes? Cool. Can't wait.

The tips make the difference. People here do tip. My objection is to the individuals that think it's okay to not. Just be prepared for shit service.grillis wrote:Man what the fuck.... i'm sure i've never heard of bar staff in Australia getting less than 15, would have to be closer to 20 if not more.. Re: tipping bartenders
When I was first in NY I was tipping at about 10% it was $5 for a guiness and $4 for a Jamesons so each time I got a drink I would leave the $1 for the barman, when I was full of guiness and so just ordering the Jamesons I was still tipping the $1 and as the measures were poured by hand they kept getting larger and larger.

Re: tipping bartenders
drink prices in Australia are pretty much the same as the US, besides the current exchange rates with the us dollar in a slump. Bartenders are on some high horse expecting tips when theres countless other service sector jobs where tipping isn't even a factor. It's just silly. I feel like the bars are an extortion of our right to gather, the dj's get paid scraps. Besides byob renegades usually make the best party experiences.

Re: tipping bartenders
I work full time in a bar and get bought about 5 drinks a week by regular customers. I must be doing something right.
I can't see it happening very often/at all if I worked somewhere like wetherspoons though.

It isnt a law, youre just doing your job, why should you expect to get tipped?? People read a menu, see that something costs £5, it doesnt say anywhere that should actually be £5 + tip in order to not get shit service the next time you want a drink.esfandyar wrote:Get a service job in the states and then make an opinion. If I gave shit service to everybody that didnt tip me in my office job I'd be sacked......dont see why its any different.
A tip should be earnt not customary.
Edit:- Like I said I was a barman for a year and a half. Got paid minimum wage and work 10am - 4am on weekends.

Re: tipping bartenders
I hate it when the bartender insists you sit down and they bring it over, thus incurring a service charge. I'm paying 6 euros for this pint and I'll gladly walk to the bar and get it thank you very much.

Re: tipping bartenders
Yeh to be honest when there's no significant difference in the cost of goods why should i expect a difference in service dependent on whether i tip or not? Do people in retail stores expect a tip if they've served a customer? If you're not happy with how much you're being paid you make the issue with your establishment not with the customers. I understand that it's just a standard in the USA so it's unlikely to change but people in those industries should accept that foreigners are unlikely to realise the protocol, just put some signs up otherwise you're just pretending like you're owed something.
Re: tipping bartenders
so far it just seems most of you are all ok with exploiting how the service industry works in the states. what im saying is that its different here. hopefully you all understand. if you dont tip here you hurt the livelihood of workers within the service industry.
if a bar was to make a server get paid a decent wage hourly and not factor in tips, thus increasing the prices on the food and alcohol to accommodate, then no one would go there because they would go down the street to the business that has cheaper prices. here, no one would get it if that was placed into a business model. this discussion also brings up something which i find hard to live with because its capitalism at its finest. only here in america does a service of work have a major part of the income come into question with how hard you work in the payer's eyes. there are so many things that might give the payer the idea that you are not working hard, when in reality you are trying to keep a full bar of people happy.

Re: tipping bartenders
I always tip but there are very real differences around the UK. In Liverpool it was customary to tell the bar staff to take their own which would usually be about 20/30p each time you got a drink, in other parts of the UK they don't have the tip glass at the side of the till and so would actually take the price of a drink which would be done once during the evening.
I always tip or at least offer I find it just creates a better atmosphere and also helps getting served when the bars get busier.

Re: tipping bartenders
Minimum wage is minimum wage tho. If thats what your wage is advertised as then thats what your wage is, anything you receive extra is a bonus. I worked 60 hours a week at certain points for minimum wage, I did not factor in any tips or anything that I may or may not have received. I just assumed I would be earning the minimum wage. I dont see why it should be any different in America.
If you go to a shoe store, you tell the worker what size you want, they will then go and find the shoes. You may then require a different size, which they will go and get for you. They dont expect to be tipped. Theyre proabably working for minimum wage. I dont see what the difference is and I dont see how being forced to tip somebody no matter how shit the service may have been is exploiting the American Service Industry.

might seem that way because its different from what you are used to. nothing wrong with that. if i was in england, europe, australia, where ever, i would feel compelled to tip the server/bartender, because its how we roll over here.cityzen wrote:To me, this is some proper backward shit. derp every other country manages to do it...people are always gonna go to bars, even if they feel they're being ripped off.esfandyar wrote:so far it just seems most of you are all ok with exploiting how the service industry works in the states. what im saying is that its different here. hopefully you all understand. if you dont tip here you hurt the livelihood of workers within the service industry.
