no way man, food markup is already at least 300% and drink markups way above that in some cases, especially high end wines. bartenders and servers here could get paid decently for their work without tips, it's just up to the restaurant/bar owner to be willing to make less money for him/herself. it's the individual restaurant owner that keeps the hourly wage low, not the government. the government just allows for it. if someone is a career server and works in a top end restaurant, i'd bet you they're getting more than minimum wage.

but on the notion of tipping servers, it doesn't seem any numbers have been posted. minimum wage in the states is now $7.25 i believe. you can barely live on that. most servers in restaurants are getting paid around $2 per hour, i have no clue how much most bartenders make. on top of that, very few restaurants or bars offer health insurance to their workers and the workers have to find external insurance and pay full price.

my tipping is generally $1 per drink for basic service, and higher tips for great mixed drinks and conversation. if you're a notoriously good tipper (like i am in several restaurants and bars) you often get free drinks. i've gotten free $100+ bottles of wine several times and at one of my favorite restaurants i rarely paid for appetizers or desserts.

You guys are also forgetting how tipping increases for people working closer to the city based on traffic..
and How an establishment with high end product will also bring better tips thus better servers...

So - The thing is also set up to benefit real estate and higher class establishments..

America is a free market rape in every direction..

The beach area where I'm from - Has to provide dormitories for their servers
- because they couldn't afford to live there during the summer based on wages vs. beach rental prices.
So they ship in a bunch of kids from Germany who want a summer living abroad.

American kids would wreck the dorms or turn it into a crackhouse.

I also would like to know this: How many of you who say "why should I tip, get higher wages..."(while yes, I agree, Servers should get higher wages) have been a server/bartender before?

Secondly the whole tipping thing makes me think that you must not have anything like a proper pub that we have here. I mean giving bad service for not being tipped? Shit would immediately kick off over here if someone jus started ignoring someone at the bar like that.

This.

Also, i dont believe the americans have the whole buying rounds ting. if i buy a round, ill normally get the barman one,(not every round, but at least once in the night) unless hes being a miserable c.u.n t.

Everyone here in this thread also seems to act like bar service is the same as service in a wanky restaurant.

I mean all I do is get drunk off my ass and talk bollocks down the pub. As long as the barman keeps the drinks coming and doesn't act like a tnuc I'm happy

(and I have worked behind a bar before you all start going all "ahh you can't say that. It's hard work")

I rarely drink when I'm out, way to expensive now adays. Usually I just get plastered as on a full stomach, the buzz will last me most of the night.

Although last time I felt bad, just asking for water all night, so I tipped the bartender a fiver for one of my waters. After that he never glared again when I asked for a water

And the Sumerians were brewing "beer" thousands of years before the British existed, thats beyond the point :corntard:

I don't know how it is in the states (I'm sure it varies state to state), but you just cant drink on the job here. I mean, yeah, I've had people buy me shots while I'm working, and I might do them once in a blue moon, but you can lose your bartending/serving license over that.

You're not really supposed to drink on the job but a lot do. Talking at proper pubs here though not chain places. Still you're obviously gonna get fired if you get pissed up mid shift though

we are agreeing on the same thing, the idea to increase prices more on the products being sold to increase the workers pay is crazy, i was being facetious.

that makes absolutely no sense

it's the employers in the US that are taking the piss and somehow you accept this? i can understand that with the way things work it's important for you to get these tips but that doesn't mean that you're entitled to them. it's a totally fucked up way of doing things that employers can take the piss out of employees in such a way that the customer is basically coerced into tipping staff to ensure decent service

not criticising you or any other bar worker as you have to work within the system that's in place, but it's an awful state of affairs
yeah badger its really shitty. im not accepting anything, i do realize however that it would be extremely difficult to change this system of service alone. there are no server unions, no workers organizations that happens for servers. one thing the UK has over the US again is a long history of workers struggle that the US has had some luck with but nothing like the UK has, and it shows. service workers get fucked left and right by bosses here. somehow within the industry, it was accepted that part of a worker's income is weighted depending on how good their service is, never to be assured it will always be there. as a bartender, I have made anywhere from 30 dollars in night to 500 dollars in a night. there are benefits to this though, such as a night that you make 500 dollars in a 7 hour shift. but, its never constant. you can guesstimate though depending on which day how much money you might make, like you are more likely to make better money on a friday rather than a monday.

British people make daft holiday plans... why spend so much money on going somewhere to sit by a hotel pool for 2 weeks without seeing anything of the country they're in?

If I go to my local I always get served by one of two people, known them years. I don't tip them but I will offer to buy them a drink now and again. They let me run up a slate when I am skint so it's all good.

I have never tipped a barman, not how we do here but thus seems like such a good idea
