no way man, food markup is already at least 300% and drink markups way above that in some cases, especially high end wines. bartenders and servers here could get paid decently for their work without tips, it's just up to the restaurant/bar owner to be willing to make less money for him/herself. it's the individual restaurant owner that keeps the hourly wage low, not the government. the government just allows for it. if someone is a career server and works in a top end restaurant, i'd bet you they're getting more than minimum wage.esfandyar wrote:if a bar was to make a server get paid a decent wage hourly and not factor in tips, thus increasing the prices on the food and alcohol to accommodate,
but on the notion of tipping servers, it doesn't seem any numbers have been posted. minimum wage in the states is now $7.25 i believe. you can barely live on that. most servers in restaurants are getting paid around $2 per hour, i have no clue how much most bartenders make. on top of that, very few restaurants or bars offer health insurance to their workers and the workers have to find external insurance and pay full price.
my tipping is generally $1 per drink for basic service, and higher tips for great mixed drinks and conversation. if you're a notoriously good tipper (like i am in several restaurants and bars) you often get free drinks. i've gotten free $100+ bottles of wine several times and at one of my favorite restaurants i rarely paid for appetizers or desserts.
