Just thought I'd bump this as opposed to making another thread.

I'm about to start an English degree at uni, and want to broaden my horizons before I start.

I'm looking for a blend of fantasy but in the real world? Like not spells and witchcraft BS, just bizarre tales in a city like setting. Any suggestions?

I havent read it, but 'The City & the City' by China Miéville seems to fit your description well and was well rated in the press.

Thanks :4: Heading into town tomorrow, probably going to pick up that, The New York Trilogy and House of Leaves (all mentioned earlier). Need some intellectual stimulation this summer

Haruki Murakami is great, not overrated IMO. Most of his books might fit your bill.

The Machine Stops by E. M Forster. It's a short story about the future, it's really good.

I recommend Dead Air by Ian Banks, good read.

anything by Bret Easton Ellis.

Also Once Were Warriors is essential if you havent already read it.
