Is there any way to translate straight up sub bass on one of the oscillators on massive? I used to throw the pitch down to like -30, and mess around with the waves until I got some low clipping sound, but that obviously sucks. Any suggestions?

A pure sine wave - 24, no processing.

i'm looking for any guidance on making/finding drum sounds that are sort of "clicky," for lack of a better word. burial uses them a lot...some other examples are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzldAZy9ai4 (right at the start)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rMeyJzh0dQ (whole beat has this kind of sound, starting at like :42 or so)

i'm not really sure what that type of sample is called so i don't know how to keep an eye out for it. i just picked up komplete 7 so i've got battery if there are any similar sounds in there someone can point me toward (been spending my time trying to learn FM8 so i haven't gone through battery's samples yet). if not, though, any samples available online that are similar would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot!

Look for rim shots and really bottom heavy snares. Another thing worth trying is recording yourself hitting wood and stuff.
Here's a samplepack by Music Radar with some burial-type hits:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NBD1P7AL

It's got the rim shot and the heavy snare, plus a few hats, but I'd still suggest looking around for yourself a bit.

Those growling, ripping, all consuming, basslines

Post by Nyyx » Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:40 am

Ok, so I've been trying to figure this out for quite some time with no luck. I'm talking about the basslines with endless movement, and real oomph. Everything that I come up with sounds contrived, mundane, and just... too contained. I'm using Massive, which I'm beginning to attribute my failures to. The kind of sounds that I'm trying to emulate, are like the ones in the video posted below. When the monstrous machine takes a step. Any and all help would be most appreciated, because I'm about to ram something inside my ass if I don't figure it out.

Prepare your anus.

this is a basically a Neurofunk style reese bass.
and just an FYI, the Noisia version of this is like the holy grail in the world of drum n bass production lol...

http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f ... 17&start=0
http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=193975

start by reading those, use the DSF google search for reese, neurofunk, resampling, and then dig in. also lots of good info on DOA.

Its an incredibly ill reese on top of a fuckload of layers, stop hearing it as one mass of sound and hear it as a bunch foley and granular delays underneath a reese.

Its the layers that make that though, and noone makes reeses like noisia... Stop blaming your synth though, massive can make some sick reese sounds.

Absolutely love the bassline that comes in around :38 and would love some pointers as to how to achieve that sound,
additionally I really like the movement to it and would be interested in that as well.
Cheers!

the bassline in this tune fits so well with the sub bass. I know how to make sounds like the one in this song, but making the sound work with the sub the way this does fails for me. I notice the sub and the bassline play different notes, yet complement eachother. And the midrange is more treble than midrange and was probably hi-passed.
...in my opinion

I hope I don't sound like a fool...
but in Massive if you go to the Performer tab there is this area where you can draw in some downward like angles that start high and fall down as fast as you like depending on how quick you rate it...(wow run on sentence :a: )
Then throw that into the cutoff and there ya go:D stabby type WOMBS :corndance:

Wow, -30?

Each dial on that pitch is a semi-tone. There are 12 semi-tones to a octave, an octave is the set of the 12 letters(keys). (so from one C to another C)

-30 makes it 2 octaves and 6 semi-tones meaning if you play C5 it'll play G2? ( think thats right?). -24 is more logical as all the keys will play the notes they're meant to be on a keyboard.

A good sub bass will sit rough between the notes of E1 and A2. So adjust your detuning (or pitching down) to suit...

If you play a pure sine in Massive at E1 > A2 it'll sound exactly the same if you pitch down and play higher, so remember that.

Anyways - I did a thread on sub here - which turned into a really informative discussion.

Looks like the other one was locked. maybe the post limit was reached. Anyway, I'll start off.

I wanna know about the aphex twin-y very high pitched percussive sounds used in the beginnings of songs like this:
I find them very aurally stimulating, hopefully they don't get too destroyed in compression. edit: they kind of do...

The only place I know to start it high passed, high resonance, very low attack and probably decay.

it was locked because there is already a general "how to make this sound" thread and the community and moderators would like all how to make this sound questions posted in that thread.
