Headphone Hinderance

Post by platinum52 » Wed Jun 15, 2011 10:17 pm

Alright peoples

I recently changed over to HDMI for my audio as well as visual on my PC. It used to be DVI > HDMI for video and standard 3.5 for the sound. When I changed it over, and then tried my headphones through the usual front jack, nothing was happening, and after a bit of dicking about I realised this. On my Sound options, I had three choices. HDMI Output. Realtek High Def (Speakers). Realtek Digital Output.

Realtek Digital Output does a couple of rear jack, so not interested.
Realtek High Def includes the front jack.
ATI HDMI obviously does my HDMI.

The only way I could get my headphones to work when I plugged them in was to put Realtek High Def as my default device, with ATI HDMI as my Default Communications device. This seemed to clear up the problem. I was getting sound through my TV until I plugged in at the front. Unfortunately though, there is still a problem. It flicks between the two every so often for a half second then comes back to the headphones. Even when you don't have any audio playing you can hear the clicks if your wearing the headphones. I never had this problem before the swap to HDMI, so does anyone know if this is a common problem with the set up I'm using, or could it be that my cable has just had its day? Haven't got round to getting down the shop and buying another cable to test yet, just thought I would write this extremely long winded thread on the off chance.

from what i understand, the hdmi audio should cut out when the headphones are plugged in. the fact that it is switching between the two is unusual! i take it you're using the hdmi from the graphics card? it might be a driver problem, make sure both the ati card and sound card drivers are up to date.

i don't think the ati card has onboard sound, i think its just passing the audio through from the sound card.

i checked for this and found this forum, people with the same problem: http://www.pcmediacenter.com.au/forum/t ... lugged-in/

i don't really know a lot about this particular subject, sorry i can't be more help!

Cheers mate, looks like this runs deeper than human error on my part. Will get on to my PC builder!
