I am not sure that I am.

I just never care enough about finishing tracks off! I know I should but I get bored and find something new and move onto the next idea. Need to work on discipline.. and drum programming.

any cure for this? im just not really feeling it anymore. im not liking any of the clips/songs ive made. ive tried making different genres, taking breaks (long ones), ive tried collabing only to really let the other guy down (sorry JFK and triggy) idk what to do to get back in the groove

Try finding something else to do for a while, are you in to art or writing or anything like that? Focus on something like that instead of music for a bit. Or even learn a new instrument?

I have been listening to it loads, and in every track you can tell the guy that made it had fun. Yeah some of the mixdown are shit, and yeah some of the playing ain't the best, but that shit is real from tha heart.

Give it a listen, and try just have fun, if that don't work say, because I got other suggestions.

Ive been on a mad break when school was on doing loads of art didnt much help. I do have a guitar though.

Hook up with friends and make unserious music. I did this recently and found that ideas were spillin out much quicker. Hopefully in return that will inspire you to work on your main project as well.

I find the best tunes come accidentally, then again not saying my music is particularly amazing, just saying there's a certain zen quality in, not forcing the art of production upon yourself, but instead just letting it grow upon you. Let the fruit ripen, fall, and then chow down, rather than plucking it from the tree while it's still green, namean?

Yeah, when your starting out, don't think about "would people like this?", really takes a heap of pressure off and allows creativity to flow, and learning to be done. Cause you can't really learn how to make tunes, unless you're making them

Just make whatever youre feeling at that exact moment in time. Channel emotions into music. I.E if you're angry one day make something ANGRY. If you're fucking stoned one day make something trippy and weird. If you just got a payrise at work make something that makes you feel like a champion.
Write and record ideas rather than songs - like 2 bar loops or whetever. You can come back to them and arrange / work on the best ones later .
Spend an afternoon not making tunes, but making sounds. Sometimes I spend a whole day with my synths making weird noises and RAH sounds and saving the patches. Next time youre workiung on a tune and strugging to make a sound, you have a whole bank of saved patches to use.
Maybe spend an afternoon sampling. Get some of your favourite DVDs and chop a piece of score, some crazy SFX or vox out of them, put them in a folder for future use.
Maybe go back to one of your old tracks, try making a VIP.

You can't force creativity, it just happens. There's no hard and fast rule of how to quickly acheive a sound or get that moment of inspiration, but all the stuff i've listed above helps me when i'm at a brick wall

When you're starting out, you really can't pressure yourself to churn out track after track, it just won't happen. Focus on learning new things and applying a new concept/technique/what have you each time you sit down to produce. Just because you dont have a finished product after 10 hours of messing around doesn't mean that you aren't progressing.

Also, get to know your DAW inside out and your workflow will become second nature.

Really just don't harp over finishing or even "starting" tunes, you can always go back and gain inspiration from that 8 bar beat you made 2 years ago.

IMO when you're just starting out, trying to write a whole song for practice can be daunting. You have to realize that you aren't going to be churning out listenable music for years. Break things down into individual skills and practice them, like any instrumentalist would. Spend a few hours programming drum patterns, then just scrap all of them and do it again. Diddle with all your instruments for hours, not even trying to make anything cogent. Identify what you aren't good at it, and do it in short exercises over and over. The point isn't to write 10 good songs by the time you die, the point is to get good enough at writing songs that you can do it consistently and comfortably.

I definitely have this problem where I obsess over getting every song PERFECT, when really I would be better off getting a "good enough" mix and moving on. Once you realize that your first hundred songs aren't going to be the ones to get you famous, you can relax.
