ive seen a massive decline in people who return comments (not people from here i might add) - dunno if this is somthing to do with google or what but ive gone from 20 - 35 comments to 20 - 25 comments a post

for me it depends on the subject at hand... the more interesting/controversial/funny something is, the more replies you get
