best place/way to learn musical theory.

Post by dubesteppe » Wed Jun 22, 2011 4:55 am

hello, recently I have been getting really in to trying to learn this, but half of the things i read make absolutely no sense at all. What is the best way to learn musical theory? I was thinking of maybe taking piano lessons, but I dont care about how to play the piano i just want to learn chords scales, progressions, and circle of fiths stuff. I dont want to spend a lot of time with finger placement and things like that. Well what do you guys recomend? thanks

I was never much a fan for reading about music myself. So Ill put in my two cents.

If you have 0 musical background then look up the main major and minor scales. Understand the "Whole Step, Whole Step. Halfstep" concept and it will give one the basic grasp on scales. Then... Experiment. Try changing a note in the scale and see where it takes you. Sure you can memorize the "Blue Scales" and the Harmonic Minors by heart. But I found it was much more fun to "discover" them on my own.

Its how I did it. Plus it gets you off the ground faster.

thanks for all of the replys! i have checked out all the websites, but i am still confused on how to use the circle of fifths. So say i have a melody in the root note of C. Using the circle of fifths, do i move the entire melody up until the root note is in G? If this is correct, say i was using a different scale, I would just move the melody up until the root note was the fifth key in the original scale?
