Finding a track's BPM

Post by Neds Newt » Tue Jun 28, 2011 6:51 pm

What is, if existent, the most accurate way to find the BPM of a track?

Currently trying to work

Preferably software related methods, as they would result in the most accurate.

I use this - http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

Tap out an 8 bar section, 3 times, add the totals together then divide by 3.

Manually adjust to fit 8)

Virtual DJ free edition (also tells you the key the track is in): http://www.virtualdj.com/download/free.html

or MixMeister BPM Analyzer: http://www.mixmeister.com/bpmanalyzer/bpmanalyzer.asp

Haha, I use Ableton, but have no clue how to check that. I'm so embarrassed, lol

But normally all the audio files come out as being 120 BPM as default.

just drag the song onto the timeline, double click and at the bottom it has a load of info one of which is the BPM :)

Itll say stuff like that alot, because dubstep is usually halftime.

69 x 2 = 138 ... 138 x 2 = 276... it goes up and down infinitely depending how you divide it, they are all (essentially) the same though, just dictates how finite your work will be.

This is rather misleading. Dubstep ranges all the way from 135 to 145. 6blocc stuff is generally much slower (around 135/136, but it'll show up as 105/106.etc. when you watch it in something like traktor). Then you have faster tracks (which used to be known as Big Beat). Was huge a few years back. My current wip is 145, simply because it fit the track better.

Wait, they leave it at half time bpm? I thought that was just to have a slower and more accurate working condition.

haha yeah, i was actually totally fucking around. you're right, it's definitely not stuck at 140. just a funny stereotype i was playing off of.

Well, whatever you set it to is up to you, like I said, they all represent the same essential concept...

If you have an android phone theres an application called Mobile Metronome which lets you actually tap out the beat and then adjust it to match the tempo...when the metromone matches the beat, theres your bpm!
