Tron Legacy Soundtrack

Post by VirtualMark » Fri Jul 01, 2011 7:00 am

the tron legacy soundtrack is one of the best movie soundtracks i've heard! watched a vid on it, says that daft punk blended their electronic music with a full orchestra that they had at their disposal - awesome. its kinda 80's style synth music, with a modern twist, blended with a movie style orchestra. i really liked it. :)

anyhow the purpose of my post wasn't to tell you how much i enjoyed it. i've been inspired to try to recreate this style of music, would appreciate any advice if you know how to make this sort of sound. my guess would be to use older sounding synths? massive would be my last choice for this :6: also i'm thinking i'd need lots of arpeggios, and it also sounds like quite a bit of reverb.

i recognised a few techniques they used, like i'm sure they've used a bitcrusher on a delay or reverb channel on one of the tunes. and apparently they used a plugin called grossbeat for some fx. what i'm interested in is the sound design and music composition of this sort of style.

its in the OP. but gross beat can be bought standalone, I think. Yet, I don't think it does anything standard automation can't do.
...in my opinion

Someone putting it in the OP doesn't make it a source ;)

I meant like a link to an article/interview where this is being confirmed.

Daft punk are mostly hardware, they originally were a travelling circuit bending artsy thing, then the real 'dancey' stuff came later, so alot of the sounds you hear in their tracks are flukes, true 'glitch' music... Honestly, aside from that, they mostly just rinse analog saw/square leads...

The orchestral work in that soundtrack is stunning, and Daft Punk are really solid composers theory wise.

As for recreating their sounds, use old analogues, and bend them on occasion...

Hell look up some of the old live performance vids they have on youtube, and start id'ing hardware, look for emulations.

Alot of their stuff, esp early stuff, is based on samples. That's why I found it so funny when daft punk fans were saying that Kanye West was ripping them off haha. I love daft punk tho. Been a fan since I can remember.

i remember how bummed i was when i found out that harderbetterfasterstronger was straight ripped from cola bottle baby, or whatever its called. I mean i respect sampling as a art, but i always though daft punk made that whole song from scratch

i had no idea how much the prodigy sampled either, its surprising when you learn more about music production to find out how some of the pro's have done it.

as for recreating this sound, i think i just need more skill! as basic a said, they're just great composers. listening to stuff like this is motivating me to improve my music skill. its hard to know what to work on most as theory isn't as important for a lot of the stuff i like but it wouldn't hurt to learn.

I'd recommend MiniMoog by Arturia. I actually used it recently to create a quick knock-off of Arena from the Tron Legacy soundtrack a friend needed for a video. It's my go-to for simple, analog-sounding stuff. Arturia has a lot of other 80's synth emulations as well.

Ive been messing around with recreating those sounds to help improve my understanding of synthesis since it first came out. i play around with it when i have a little free time and dealing with writer's block, here's my most recent attempt, getting close, but without all that sexy hardware it's still missing that warm airy-ness of the original.

thats pretty good! how did you do it? any particular scale?

i noticed on some of the tron stuff it sounds like they have multiple overlapping arpeggios, i don't know how they get them in tune. i'd like to get hold of a midi file as its the music theory side i find hardest.

Pardon me if I'm speaking out of line but can someone inform me what is so great about this soundtrack? I agree it did fit the movie pretty good, which is obviously the goal Daft Punk had in mind, but are they really doing anything that is new for them? New techniques or new sounds? The synths they played sounds pretty similar to all their other tracks as far as I can tell? I'm not trying to troll I promise I just want to hear why you think someone describes it as so awesome?... :?

http://sebastianwolff.info/news/2011/01 ... eet-music/

this site has some of the songs. it has the MIDI and sheet music. i find the theory pretty difficult also, so i couldnt tell you scales or anything. for the one i did, i actually just would listen to the song nonstop and then just try and locate the root notes, pencil them in and then do the same for the second note in the scale and so on. im sure there's an easier way, but whatever, some of those mess ups turned into ideas i could use for my own stuff.

i actually kinda agree with you Sine. to me it shouldnt have been branded as a solely daft punk produced soundtrack, more like hans zimmer featuring daft punk. TBH, i cant stand to listen to it without the context of the movie, but i cant stand watching the movie, so its a catch 22. for whatever reason the song ive been recreating really stuck with me, i guess im a sucker for build ups around arpeggios

Daft Punk use FL Studio?

Or can you get Grossbeat on any DAW?
