Super clean percussion/snares

Post by jaydot » Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:00 am

I've noticed in this type of more minimal production, where the emphasis is more on the drums, that everything is so tight

Everything about these track is soo clean, but especially the percussion/snares (synths too but that's for another thread)

Is it a case of well chosen samples? Are the drums actually recorded samples in most cases, just EQd/reverbed/fx'd to taste?

Maybe a bit of chorus/reverbed and layered with the right samples? That Frontier track doesn't really have what I'd describe a "metallic snare" though, I was thinking a more higher, clearer sound a bit like a metallic synth only a snare.

cv uses addictive drums a lot. also in the meanbeat samplepack there's two or three snares that sound perfect for that kinda stuff. of course you need a lot of compression and eqing to bring the tail out properly.

Don't overcomplicate drums. Just (try to) find the right samples. The first snare sounds like a snare you can find in many samplepacks or sample from metal.

The other one sounds more like some sort of percussion, reminds me of a steeldrum in some kind of way.

yeah it's more likely they are just well chosen samples rather than recorded in. with tracks like this i think it's all down to giving all those different perc sounds lots of space in the mix and programming them well. it is that simple in concept, the execution is the hard part.

I haven't had a chance to listen to your examples but I think I know the kind of snare you are talking about.
As usual in my experience its just about layering the right samples. Add FX like small amounts of reverb and delay and you'll begin to get that metallic sound. Route your layered samples through a bus, EQ them together as a whole, giving a nice EQ boost at 200hz and add compression. Use your ears with the compression to find the sound that works for you. I find adding shitloads of compression gives the snare a "bulgy" sound, so its about finding the limit and peeling it back just a teeny bit.

I've also had fun whacking Camel Crusher on the snare bus and using the compression knob on that too, as well as playing with the distortion

Good sample choice + experienced mixing + clever use of reverb = job done

Would u be using FX as inserts on those, routing their output to the snare bus as well, or routing FX sends out to the mains? thinking of trying out some drum hit resampling, n for the moment just wondering whether you'd be bussing those outputs as well as the hits

N yeh, jaydot Vulcan dubstep is badass

1st snare is something 909ish, very short, lots of beef around 150-200hz, with some white noise added on top.

pretty toilet sound IMO but.... whatevz.

very small sounds-- in both duration and freq. content-- w/ some specific reverbs applied. that rim isn't very bright but it's very chunky, and the shaker/cabasa doesn't have much body, etc. both are very short, either via gating or envelopes, or just shortened audio regions.

both have far more presence, and less sustain, than live-recorded instruments.
