Please help save my reason files!

Post by antloss » Mon Jul 11, 2011 4:38 pm

Easy people,

So the Dr Antimalware virus has murked my computer. I've successfully removed it but the comp remains a blithering idiot. Sayonara.

I've backed up all my reason files on my hard drive but none have the individual sounds routed to the file, they just relied on knowing where the sounds were saved on my comp (if that makes sense). To be honest I never really realized I could save the routes to each track which is schoolboy. But now my comp freezes for periods of time even when I ask it to do simple things like open the start list, which makes trying to sort this out as productive as a fish on a treadmill.

I'm making the long overdue move to mac, and so there is no way it will be able to locate the tunes - at least I don't think there is.

Is there anything I can do to solve this issue? It's not like my tunes are anything special to anyone, but alot of love and time has gone into 'em.

If any of you have any genuine help to offer I would be massively appreciative.

safe.

are all your sounds in one place on the hard drive? (as in all in 'my music' or 'my documents' as apposed to scattered about everywhere).if so then copy the whole folder onto another drive. drop that onto your new machine.

then when you open a reason file and it tells you the files are missing just point it to that folder and hit search. worse case you might have to find each one individually

if your comp is too messy that you cant even copy the folder over, you could try getting a caddy/enclosure, then when you get your mac use your old computer drive as an external and point search towards that, then self contain it saving the file onto the mac

safe man. yeh i've managed to get everything onto hard drive, did that before the computer really started struggling. Only issue is the sounds are kinda scattered. Like, not sure if I can remember where half of them are. Oh well, if I have to do this and it doesn't work, its just a painful new lesson to learn...

Thanks for the help anyway, James.

Open each track individually.
It`ll ask where the files are.
Just let it search the first time and re save the track.
It`ll be a shlepp to start with but will be worth it down the line.

Next time you save, when you click file search for 'self contatin settings'

it'll make the file bigger but, it'll place any audio samples in the .rns file.

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

Just re-install Windows. You can install a new copy of Windows and keep your old documents. Then you'll just have to re-install Reason and it should load your files just fine.

Switching to Mac because you got a virus is a bit of a cop-out. You're an electronic musician, learning the basics of how to use a computer properly is pretty fundamental.

Agreed, Mac is not the solution.
Just get a better understanding of internet security.
I haven`t had a virus on my production pc in years.
