New Dubstep Producer Rob Trezise Skrillex style
Hello all,
I'm new to making Dubstep. I mainly listen to Metal and Progressive Rock so you might hear so of that in the songs. My main and only influence for Dubstep is Skrillex because of his song with Korn. So anyway please check out my songs and give me feedback please.

My main influence used to be Dream THeater and Rush so Im in the progressive route with you.
Percussion cant be heard, needs to be eqed and compressed. Repetetive bass. Too many sample clips.
Sounds like it needs some work bro but your on the right track.

Thank you for those comments thinking about them I do agree with them but I think it does sound like a Skrillex style because I got the bass sound from a Skrillex bass sound tutorial and changed it a little.

Yeah fair enough cheers for your help
Re: New Dubstep Producer Rob Trezise Skrillex style
First off, there's no progression in that it drops straight away which means the first thing you hear is also the last and the most exciting bit, so after about 30 seconds you've heard everything you're going to hear and you don't really feel like listening to more
The samples are okay, but you've used them waaay too much so i would suggest really cutting down on them and only using them where they're going to compliment what you've got down already
You're going to need to work on your synths and your drums, it sounds like you've used an acoustic kit which can be cool but you're not going to get that skrillex sound you seem to want with it so i would suggest going and finding some sample packs and having a look through for something more suited. It's also just looped so again there's no variation and it's easy to loose interest. You're synth sound is cool but it's kind of weak, try running it through some effects and beef it up a bit and try adding in a few other synths in again to keep interest. Also, try and steer clear of just using presets and people youtube videos on how to make someone else synths, you're not going to learn and you certainly wont develop your own style!
Have a good look into mixing, you'll find a lot of things that will help you make your song sound better all togethe and some FX like risers and little wooshes to give things the right feel
I always feel like a bit of a dick when i go over peoples tracks like this but i hope it helps you rather than offends you, good luck!:)
Oh, and welcome to the forum:)

Re: New Dubstep Producer Rob Trezise Skrillex style
i agree with a bunch of what nftfhx said. one big thing that would give your song a bigger feel would be better drums, a kick that hits harder and some layered snares. Look for the vengeance club essentials sample kits i just got some of them and they helped my sound immensely. Also, it does need more of a buildup in the beginning. I know sometimes that can be the boring part, but it does help set the mood of the whole song. Those samples would be great in the intro part into a big heavy drop. Also, what DAW are you using? If its FL, try throwing on Maximus on your master volume channel, its great for mastering a track and gives everything a fuller sound. The best advice though is really to just keep making stuff and learning along the way. Thats how i've been doing it and you just keep learning new tricks to make your sound that much better. Give my songs a listen to see those drum samples i was speaking of. Good luck man!

Thank you both of you I agree that everything needs to sound more beefy and full. I like the drum sounds because it's from my rock side of things which i'm trying to add into Dubstep but I agree that they need work on to get them to sound better in the mix. Bfbab i'm using Logic Pro as my DAW. Have you guys got any ideas on how to make my sound more beefy? And i'm getting some sample packs now actually so i'll search through for better sounds.
Thank you,
Rob

Thank you,
Rob

Laying kicks and snares, heavy eq and compression with some small reverb will give it some beef and help it sit in the mix
remember that it doesn't have to be just two kick drums for example, if you have a sample of any sort of hit even if it's not a drum and it sounds beefy, layer it behind and you'll get some original cool sounds for your percussion:)

Yeah also some form of sub bass always helps give a song a little low end. Don't always settle with a traditional sub though, make it a little interesting too

Re: New Dubstep Producer Rob Trezise Skrillex style
this really does sound nothing like skrillex. first try is not to shabby but you have alot to learn....I would look at tutorials and start reading about mixdowns and layering and learning drums.

Re: New Dubstep Producer Rob Trezise Skrillex style
btw....hes right on the sub
and to get that skrillex sound its a pitch bend....then after that you need to layer another sub under it that bends the same....

thanks for backing me up, it sounds nothing like Skrillex. Just because you copied a tutorial doesnt make your tune any better.

Re: New Dubstep Producer Rob Trezise Skrillex style
yeah. presets and tutorials are great ways to learn how your synth works and to see what effects make that sound, but never use the straight up preset. Find some way to make it different. Theres so many producers these days you have to be unique to stand out
