quickie bout a Q i cant find an answer too. So ive been reading the only real way to make tracks is through proper monitor speakers. This is what i do, however when i take my tune to the car or ipod (even though it sounds good in the studio) it sounds shit in the car or ipod (especially in the car, often its drowned in bass or snares are too sharp etc. What should you do make it according to ear in the studio or to all 3?
It sounds like a silly question i know but professional tracks sound good in all 3 soooooo...

as far as i've read, though i'm no expert, getting a mix to sound proper on studio monitors should translate it to sound good on anything and everything, though i could be wrong. have you done a/b comparisons with pro tunes on your monitors? if not that may be the place to start so you can see where/how you mixes are differing from professional tracks.

hopefully somebody else can hop on and give you a better answer as to why your mixes aren't solid across all systems

you need to learn your monitors.

get yourself a really shitty pair of home stereo speakers, some cheap headphones as well and a/b the mix with your studio monitors. its the same reason studios all used to have ns10m's, they sound pretty awful but if it sounds balanced on them it would translate almost everywhere else (I actually prefer ns10m to genelecs/mackies/krk etc but thats another story, gutted i had to sell mine)

Get some acoustic treatment
by the sounds of it your environment is making your tunes lack in bass so you're cranking it up to hear it and obviously it's going to high for the car etc.
You need to get your frequency response as flat as possible with as little artificial sound as possible

watch any video that takes place in a professional studio, note how many different monitors they have spread throughout, all different brands.

problem might be that im using a couple of krk rokit 5's but also i use some tall standing speakers that were £120. they do give out good sound but cuz they are tall they are v bass heavy. should i just switch them off and just use the little krk's?

You may be cranking the bass because your krk's can't reproduce the low end properly, so you turn it too high just so you can hear it
